What ails my eye, that its tears do not dry?
Great is its lamenting, little its sleep.

It was stricken by the slain of the house of ʿAmr and Nawfal,
and Baʿjah; so it weakened and was slow to recover.

When it remembers the slain at Kawsāʾ, it pours out tears,
like a waterskin with worn stitch-holes, made by unskilled hands.

And they were the hump, uprooted yesterday; so their people
are like a humpless she-camel, once fat, whose spring pasture is late.
