    And convey to Ma'qil son of Khuwaylid, there with you,

    messages whose bearers bring them to you,

    following another that had already come before then

    to you, arriving with its scalp bristling.

    And the peoples know that you are a lord,

    and that you come from a house firm in its judgment.

    وَدَعها إِذا ما غَيَّبَتها سَفاتُها

    So do not send your hands after the viper to seize it;

    and leave it when its windblown sand has hidden it.

    Quench, do not kindle, and do not be a fire-poker

    for the enemies' fire, sending its harm flying.

    For among sayings is one that never misses the vital spot,

    when it slips free from the back of the tongue.

    And its impact is mighty when it is sent forth,

    yet, had it been restrained, restraining it would have been easy.

    وَهَل يَنفَعَن نَفسي إِلَيكُم أَناتُها

    And my soul has not yet been content to send it to you;

    and will its forbearance toward you ever benefit my soul?
