غَداتَئِذٍthat morning مِنfrom شاءِthe sheep قِردٍQird وَكاهِلِand Kahil
And a woman asking what her husband's share had been
The wife who was once obedient to her husband
that morning, from the sheep of Qird and Kahil,
Became thereafter like an ape with mange on its shoulder
تَوَقّىshe shields herself بِأَطرافِwith the ends القِرانِof the binding rope وَعَينُهاand her eye

shielded herself with the ends of the binding rope, her eye
She dodged the cattle prods with her hands while her eyes
like the eye of a bustard the falcons had missed.
Were like those of a one-eyed camel missing its mark

We returned her sons to a protector, and she came
We returned her to her tribe's lord, whereupon she was
to be counted there among the widowed women.
Counted among the widowed women
وَأَشعَثَand a shaggy man بَوشِىٍّwith many dependants شَفَيناwe quenched أُحاحَهُhis burning thirst
غَداتَئِذٍthat morning ذيwith جَردَةٍa worn cloak مُتَماحِلِlanky
And a shaggy man with many dependants—we quenched his burning thirst
A disheveled young man whose breath smelled foul
that morning—a lanky man in a threadbare cloak.
Thereafter became like a scraggly weakling
أَهَمَّtroubled بِنَيهِhis sons صَيفُهُمtheir summer وَشِتاؤُهُمand their winter
فَقالواso they said تَعَدَّset out وَاِغزُand raid وَسطَamong الأَراجِلِthe foot soldiers
Their summer and winter weighed upon his sons,
His summers and winters worried the clan
so they said, 'Set out and raid among the foot soldiers.'
So they said, "Step forth amidst the feet!"
تَأَبَّطَtucked under his arm نَعلَيهِhis two sandals وَشِقَّand half فَريرِهِhis lamb

He tucked his sandals and half his lamb beneath his arm,
He tucked in his slippers and tore his cloak
and said, 'Are there not people this side of Hafa'il?'
And said, "Are not people the sons of mares?"
دَلَفتُI advanced لَهُtoward him تَحتَbeneath الوَغىthe battle's din بِمُرِشَّةٍwith a blood-spurting thrust

I advanced upon him amid the battle's din with a blood-spurting thrust,
I slipped beneath the fray with a drawn sword
gushing blood that rose over the backs of the fingers.
That hovered over the humps of the sandals
كَأَنَّas though اِرتِجازَthe chanting الجُعثُمِيّاتِof the Juʿthumī bows وَسطَهُمamong them
نَوائِحُmourning women يَجمَعنَmingling البُكاthe weeping بِالأَزامِلِwith loud cries
The chanting of the Juʿthumī bows among them seemed like
As if the elegy of the Juthamis amongst them
mourning women mingling their weeping with loud cries.
Were bereavements that gathered wailing with keening
غَداةَon the morning المُلَيحِat al-Mulayh نَحنُwe كَأَنَّناas though we were
غَواشيenveloping masses مُضِرٍّof a low-hanging cloud تَحتَbeneath ريحٍwind وَوابِلِand heavy rain
On the morning at al-Mulayh, we were as though
The day after the fight, we were as if
the enveloping masses of a low-hanging cloud beneath wind and heavy rain.
We were stormy clouds of Mudar beneath wind and rain
رَمَيناهُمُwe shot at them حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen اِربَثَّfell into disorder أَمرُهُمtheir affairs
وَعادَand became الرَصيعُthe studded fitting نُهيَةًan endpoint لِلحَمائِلِfor the sword-belts
We shot at them until, when their ranks fell into confusion,
We shot arrows at them until their matter was chaotic
and the studded fitting became the end of the sword-belts,
And limpness returned to the penis
عَلَوناهُمُwe bore down on them بِالمَشرَفِيِّwith the Mashrafi sword وَعُرِّيَتand were bared
نِصالُblades السُيوفِof the swords تَعتَليstriking بِالأَماثِلِagainst the foremost men
we bore down on them with Mashrafi steel, and bared were
We subjugated them with the Mašrafi swords and laid bare
the sword blades, striking against the foremost men.
The notches of the swords rising over the skulls
