    سَتَلقى مَن تُحِبُّ فَتَستَريحُ

    Steady, O wounded heart;

    you shall meet the one you love and find rest.

    I warned you against pursuing Umm ʿAmr,

    warning of the consequence, while you were still sound.

    I said, “Be sure to avoid a cousin’s wrath,

    the pursuit of a band, and far-flung separation.”

    No remnant of wine from Adhriʿat,

    like a rooster’s eye and guarded by citadels—

    decanted and clarified, a pure wine,

    Syrian, fragrant when brought forth—

    يُقالُ لَها دَمُ الوَدَجِ الذَبيحُ

    when its seals are broken and undone,

    they call it the blood of a slaughtered jugular;

    nor any lingering pool over which

    in a barren waste a Yemeni wind blows all night,

    following the rain of a lightning-lit, pouring cloud,

    its water mingled with chill and wind,

    is sweeter than her kiss when

    al-ʿAyyūq draws near and the barking falls silent.
