يَلومونَنيthey blame me فيfor غَيرِno ذَنبٍoffense جَنَيتُهُI committed it
وَغَيرِيَand someone other than me فيfor الذَنبِthe offense الَّذيthat كانَoccurred أَلوَمُmore blameworthy
They blame me for an offense I never committed,
They blame me for no fault I committed,
while someone else is more to blame for the offense that occurred.
While another is to blame for the fault of which he is accused.
أَمِنّاwe trusted أُناساًpeople كُنتِyou used to تَأتَمِنينَهُمtrust them
فَزادواso they added عَلَيناagainst us فيin الحَديثِthe talk وَأَوهَمواand gave false impressions
We trusted people whom you used to trust,
Did I not trust people, believing them to be true friends?
so they embellished the talk against us and gave false impressions.
Yet they went beyond us in talk and deceived.
وَقالواand they attributed لَناto us ماwhat لَمdid not نَقُلwe say ثُمَّthen كَثَّرواthey multiplied
عَلَيناagainst us وَباحواand they divulged بِالَّذيwhat كُنتُI used to أَكتُمُconceal
And they attributed to us what we had not said, then said still more
They attributed to us what we did not say, then multiplied
against us, and divulged what I used to conceal.
Accusations against us and divulged what I used to conceal.
وَقَدand indeed مُنِحَتhas been given عَينيmy eye القَذىgrit لِفِراقُكُمbecause of parting from you
وَعادَand returned لَهاto it تَهتانُهاits flow of tears فَهيَso it تَسجُمُsheds tears
And parting from you has bestowed grit upon my eye,
My eye was hurt by the irritation of your separation
and its flow of tears has returned, so it pours them forth.
And it returned to blinking, so it is flowing with tears.
وَأَنكَرتُand I found unfamiliar طيبَthe sweetness العَيشِof life مِنّيfrom me وَكُدِّرَتand was clouded
عَلَيَّfor me حَياتيmy life وَالهَوىand love مُتَقَسِّمُdivided
And I found life's sweetness estranged from me, and clouded
I lost the taste for the pleasures of life
was my life, while love was divided.
And my life was embittered while passion lies divided.
وَصافَيتُand I sincerely befriended نَشواناًan intoxicated man فَلَمbut did not أَرَI find فيهِمُamong them
هَوايَmy love وَلاnor الوُدَّthe affection الَّذيthat كُنتُI used to أَعلَمُknow
And I befriended an intoxicated man, yet did not find among them
I sobered up from intoxication but I did not find among them
my love, nor the affection I once knew.
Either my love or the affection I used to know.
أَلَيسَis it not عَظيماًa grievous thing أَنthat نَكونَwe should be بِبَلدَةٍin a town
كِلاناboth of us بِهاin it ثاوٍdwelling وَلاand not نَتَكَلَّمُwe speak
Is it not grievous that we should be in the same town,
Is it not awful that we are in a country
both of us dwelling there, yet we do not speak?
Where we are both living yet do not talk?
وَلاand do not تَصرِمينيcut me off إِنif تَرَينيyou see me أُحِبُّكُمI love you
أَبوءٌI confess بِذَنبٍto a sin إِنَّنيindeed I أَناI أَظلَمُam more in the wrong
And do not cut me off if you see me loving you;
Do not blame me if you see me still loving you -
I confess to a sin; indeed, I am more in the wrong.
I admit to a sin, for indeed it is I who am unjust.
