أَأَترُكُshall I forsake لَيلىLayla لَيسَthere is not بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهاand between her
سِوىexcept لَيلَةٍa night إِنّيindeed I إِذاًthen لَصَبورُsurely very patient
Shall I forsake Layla, with nothing between me and her
Shall I leave Layla when between us
but a single night? Then I would indeed be very patient!
Is but a night? Then I'll have patience.
هَبونيconsider me اِمرَءاًa man مِنكُمfrom among you أَضَلَّhas lost بَعيرَهُhis camel
لَهُhe has ذِمَّةٌa right to protection إِنَّindeed الذِمامَthe obligation of protection كَبيرُgreat
Consider me a man among you who has lost his camel:
Give me one of you who has lost his camel;
He has a right to protection; that obligation is indeed weighty.
He has a responsibility - loss is heavy.
وَلِلصّاحِبُand for the companion المَتروكُthe forsaken أَعظَمُgreater حُرمَةًrespect due
عَلىupon صاحِبِa companion مِنthan أَنthat يَضِلَّgo astray بَعِبرُunclear; likely بعير, 'a camel'
And a forsaken companion is owed greater respect
The companion left behind has greater sanctity
by a companion than is [a camel] that goes astray.
Upon the companion than to lose his mount.
عَفاmay pardon اللَهُGod عَنregarding لَيلىLayla العَداةُthe enemies; likely الغداة, 'this morning' فَإِنَّهاfor she
إِذاwhen حَكَمَتshe passes judgment حَكماًa judgment عَلَيَّagainst me تَجورُshe is unjust
May God pardon Layla [this morning?], for she,
May God forgive Layla the enemy, for verily
when she passes judgment on me, is unjust.
When she judges me, she oppresses.
