أَعاتِكَO Atikah هَلّاwhy not إِذwhen بَخِلتَyou withheld فَلاso not تَرىyou see
لذيfor one with صَبوَةٍpassionate longing زُلفىnearness لَدَيكِwith you وَلاand no رَقّىhealing charms
O Atikah, why, since you withheld your favor and see no
Your indifference - when you withheld affection - meant I saw
nearness for a lover with you, nor healing charms,
No tender companion to sit by me, no soothing melody.
رَدَدتِyou returned فُؤاداًa heart قَدalready تَوَلّىcarried away بِهِwith it الهَوىpassion
وَسَكَّنتِand you soothed عَيالاdependents (wording uncertain) تَمَلُّgrow weary وَلاand not تُرقىare healed by charms
did you not return a heart that passion had carried away,
You made a heart that loved you bitterly turn away,
and soothe dependents who grow weary and are not healed by charms?
And stilled dependents who can neither rest nor find peace.
وَلكِنand yet خَلَعتِyou wrenched away القَلبَthe heart بِالوَعدِwith promises وَالمُنىand hopes
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see يَوماًever مِنكِfrom you جوداًgenerosity وَلاand no صِدقاtruthfulness
Yet you wrenched away my heart with promises and hopes,
But you cast off my heart with promises and wishes,
and I have never seen generosity or truthfulness from you.
Never have I seen from you generosity or sincerity.
أَتَنسَينَdo you forget أَيّاميmy days بِرَبعِكِat your dwelling مُدنَفاًgravely ill
صَريعاًstricken بَأَرضِin the land of الشَأمِSyria ذاhaving سَقَمٍillness مُلقىleft lying
Do you forget my days at your dwelling, gravely ill,
Do you forget my days wasting at your camp in misery,
stricken in the land of Syria, left lying there sick?
Laid low in Damascus, sick, forsaken?
وَلَيسَand there is no صَديقٌa friend يَرتَضيis willing لِوَصِيَّةٍfor last instructions
وَأَدعوand I call لِدائيfor my illness بِالشَرابِfor a drink فَماbut not أَسقىI am given drink
And there is no friend willing to receive my last instructions,
No friend will consent to a last bequest -
and I call for a drink for my illness, but none is given me.
I call out for a drink to cure my sickness, but nothing slakes my thirst.
وَأَكبَرُand the greatest هَمّيof my concerns أَنthat أَرىI see لَكِof yours مُرسَلاًa messenger
فَطولَso throughout نَهاريmy day جالِسٌsitting أَرقُبُI watch الطُرقاthe roads
My greatest concern is to see a messenger of yours,
My greatest sorrow: to see a messenger come from you -
so throughout my day I sit watching the roads.
So my days stretch long as I sit watching the roads.
فَواso, alas كَبِديmy liver إِذsince لَيسَthere is no ليfor me مِنكِfrom you مَجلِسٌan audience
فَأَشكواso I complain لِذيwhat (reading uncertain) بيin me مِنfrom هَواكِبِyour love (ending unclear) وَماand what أَلقىI endure
So, alas for my liver, since I have no audience with you,
Woe to my liver, since I have no council with you,
to lament what your love does to me, and what I endure.
I complain to Him who decreed all this about your orbits and their course.
رَأَيتُكِI saw you تَزدادينَyou increase لِلصَّبِّtoward the lovesick lover غِلظَةًin harshness
وَيَزدادُand increases قَلبيmy heart كُلَّevery يَومٍday لَكُمfor you (plural) عِشقاًin love
I have seen you grow harsher toward the lovesick lover,
I saw you grow more stubborn toward passion,
while every day my heart grows more in love with you.
While my heart day by day grew more infatuated with you.
