ياO حُنَّHunn إِنّيindeed I لِماbecause of what حَدَّثتَنيyou told me أُصُلاًat dusk
مُرَنَّحٌreeling مِنfrom ضَميرِthe inner depths of الوَجدِgrief مَعمودُstricken
O Hunn, because of what you told me at dusk, I am
reeling, stricken by grief deep within.
تَخافُyou fear نَزعَthe loss of اِمرِىءٍa man كُنّاwe used to نَعيشُlive بِهِthrough him
مَعروفُهُhis bounty إِنif طَلَبناwe seek العُرفَa favor مَوجودُavailable
You fear the loss of a man who sustained us,
whose bounty is there if we seek a favor.
وَاِعلَمand know بِأَنّيthat I لِمَنtoward whoever عادَيتَyou oppose مُضطَغِنٌharboring resentment
ضَبّاًrancor وَأَنّيand that I عَلَيكَon your account اليَومَtoday مَحسودُenvied
And know that against whomever you oppose I harbor
rancor, and that today I am envied on your account.
فَإِنَّfor indeed شُكرَكَgratitude to you عِنديwith me لاno اِنقِضاءَend لَهُfor it
ماas long as دامَremains بِالجِزعِin the valley bend مِنof لُبنانَLebanon مُجَلمودُa great boulder
For my gratitude to you has no end,
as long as a great boulder remains in Lebanon's valley bend.
أَنتَyou المُمَدَّحُthe much-praised one وَالمُغلىand the one whose value is raised بِهاthrough it ثَمَناًin worth
إِذfor لاnot يُعاتَبُare reproached صُمُّhard الجَندَلِstones الشودُunclear form; perhaps black
You are the much-praised one, whose worth is raised by it,
for the hard, [perhaps black] stones are not reproached.
إِنif تُمسِyou are at evening فيin مَنقَلَيthe two passes of مُخلانَMukhlan مَرتَحِلاًdeparting
يَبِنwill depart مِنَfrom اليَمَنِYemen المَعروفُkindness وَالجودُand generosity
If at evening you are departing through Mukhlan's two passes,
kindness and generosity will depart from Yemen.
وَلَمand did not تَزَلcease فيin اِصطِناعِearning الحَمدِpraise تَبذُلُهُyou bestow it
لَمّاwhen اِعتَرىbeset الناسَthe people لَأواءُhardship وَمَجهودُand exhaustion
And you have never ceased to lavish it in earning praise,
when hardship and exhaustion beset the people,
حَتّىso that even الَّذيthat which بَينَbetween عُسفانٍUsfan إِلىto عَدَنٍAden
لَحبٌa broad, clear road لِمَنfor whoever يَطلُبُseeks المَعروفَbounty أُخدودُa deep furrow
so that even the stretch from Usfan to Aden
is a broad road, a deep furrow for whoever seeks bounty.
