ياoh لَيتَwould that مَنwhoever مَنَعَwithheld المَعروفَkindness يُمنَعُهُwere denied it
حَتّىso that يَذوقَmight taste رِجالٌmen غَبَّthe consequences of ماwhat صَنَعواthey did
Oh, would that whoever withheld kindness were denied it,
So that men might taste the consequences of what they had done.
وَلَيتَand would that رِزقَsustenance رِجالٍmen مِثلُlike نائِلِهِمtheir giving
قوتٌsustenance كَقوتِlike sustenance وَوُسعٌand abundance كَالَّذيlike that which وُسِعواthey were given in abundance
And would that men's sustenance matched their giving:
Sustenance for sustenance, and abundance such as they were granted.
وَلَيتَand would that لِلنّاسِfor people خَطّاًa mark فيon وُجوهِهِمُtheir faces
تَبينُbecome clear أَخلاقُهُمtheir characters فيهِin it إِذاwhen اِجتَمَعواthey gathered
And would that people had a mark upon their faces,
In which their characters became clear when they gathered.
وَلَيتَand would that ذاone given to الفُحشِfoul speech لاقىmet فاحِشاًsomeone foul-mouthed أَبَداًalways
وَوافَقَand encountered الحِلمَforbearance أَهلُpeople of الحِلمِforbearance فَاِرتَدَعواso they restrained themselves
And would that the foul-mouthed always encountered someone foul-mouthed,
And the forbearing met with forbearance, and so restrained themselves.
