May God not send Abd Allah far away; he shall never
be parted from me as long as the wind blows.

Radiant, of al-Batha’s people, he was raised
to glory and lordship by the fair-faced and generous.

An inexhaustible well: when water-drawers reach its pool,
the last drawer never tells them, "Scoop from the bottom!"

Outspoken when roused to roar, never hiding himself,
like a lion whom yarrow and wormwood do not conceal.

Sweet in disposition, his character is never loathed;
he charges boldly into the engulfing depths of death.

Where is he who sustains his dependent and bears the
gravest calamity, and whose neighbor is showered with bounty?

When he passed al-Nahl from Rimaʿ, I seemed
a drunkard, plied by cupbearers with morning wine.
حَتّىuntil دُفِعناwe were thrust إِلىto ذيone possessing مَيعَةٍimpetuous vigor تَئِقٍquick-tempered
كَالذِنبِlike a tail فارَقَهُdeparted from him السُلطانُpower وَالروحُand spirit
Until we were thrust upon an impetuous, quick-tempered man,
like a tail from which power and spirit had departed.

And a band of elders from al-Anqur confronted us,
as though they were monkeys when they met us.
