وَلا توعِد لِتَقتُلَهُ عَلِيّاً

وَلا توعِد لِتَقتُلَهُ عَلِيّاً

فَإِنَّ وَعيدَهُ كَلَأُ وَبيلُ

فَإِنَّ وَعيدَهُ كَلَأُ وَبيلُ

And do not threaten ʿAlī with death;

Do not threaten to kill Ali,

for threatening him is noxious fodder.

For his threats are empty and futile.

وَنَحنُ بِبَطنِ مَكَّةَ إِن تَداعى

وَنَحنُ بِبَطنِ مَكَّةَ إِن تَداعى

لِرَهطِكَ مِن بَني عَمروٍ رَعيل

لِرَهطِكَ مِن بَني عَمروٍ رَعيل

And we were in Mecca’s valley, if there rallied

We in the valley of Mecca, if summoned

to your clan a band from Banū ʿAmr—

For your tribe of Banu Amr are few.

أولوا الجَمعِ المُقَدَّمِ حينَ تابوا

أولوا الجَمعِ المُقَدَّمِ حينَ تابوا

إِلَيكَ وَمَن يُوَزِّعُهُم قَليلُ

إِلَيكَ وَمَن يُوَزِّعُهُم قَليلُ

men of the foremost host, when they returned

Those who led the advanced group when they repented

to you, with few to hold them in check.

And came to you, how few they are!

فَلَمّا أَن تَفانَينا وَأَودى

فَلَمّا أَن تَفانَينا وَأَودى

بِثَروَتِنا التَرَحُّلُ وَالنُزولُ

بِثَروَتِنا التَرَحُّلُ وَالنُزولُ

Then, when we had destroyed one another, and ruin had overtaken

When we grew weak and our wealth

our wealth through journeying and encamping,

Was diminished by moving and descending,

جَعَلتَ لُحومَنا غَرَضاً لَدَيهِم

جَعَلتَ لُحومَنا غَرَضاً لَدَيهِم

لِتُهلِكَنا عُرَينَةُ أَو سَلولُ

لِتُهلِكَنا عُرَينَةُ أَو سَلولُ

you made our flesh a target for them,

You made us prey for them

so that ʿUrayna or Salūl might destroy us.

To destroy us, Uraynah or Salul.
