أَلالAh, do not تَقُلsay مَهلاًwait فَقَدfor already ذَهَبَhas gone المَهلُrespite
أَلال تَقُل مَهلاً فَقَد ذَهَبَ المَهلُ
وَماand not كُلُّevery مَنone who يَلحىreproaches مُحِبّاًa lover لَهُhe has عَقلُsense
وَما كُلُّ مَن يَلحى مُحِبّاً لَهُ عَقلُ
Ah, do not say, 'Wait'; there is no respite left.
Do not say wait, for the time of waiting is past
And not everyone who reproaches a lover has sense.
Not everyone who is in love has wisdom
لَقَدindeed كانَit was فيfor حَولَينِtwo years حالاًa state وَلَمand did not أَزُرI visit
لَقَد كانَ في حَولَينِ حالاً وَلَم أَزُر
هَوايmy beloved وَإِنeven though خُوِّفتُI was threatened عَنaway from حُبِّهاloving her شُعلُflames
هَواي وَإِن خُوِّفتُ عَن حُبِّها شُعلُ
Indeed, for two years this has been the case, and I have not visited
For two years I did not visit her abode
my beloved, though I have been threatened with flames to deter me from loving her.
Yet I love her, though I was warned against loving her
حَمىbarred المَلِكُthe king الجَبّارُthe tyrannical عَنّيfrom me لِقاءَهاmeeting her
حَمى المَلِكُ الجَبّارُ عَنّي لِقاءَها
فَمِنso, from دونِهاbefore reaching her نُخشىwe fear المَتالِفُdeadly perils وَالقَتلُand slaughter
فَمِن دونِها نُخشى المَتالِفُ وَالقَتلُ
The tyrannical king has barred me from meeting her.
The Almighty King has forbidden me from meeting her
So on the way to her we fear deadly perils and slaughter.
Without her we fear familiarity and death
فَلاso no خَيرَgood فيin حُبٍّa love يُخَلفُleaves behind وَبالُهُits ill consequences
فَلا خَيرَ في حُبٍّ يُخَلفُ وَبالُهُ
وَلاnor فيin حَبيبٍa beloved لاnot يَكونُthere is لَهُfor him وَصلُunion
وَلا في حَبيبٍ لا يَكونُ لَهُ وَصلُ
So there is no good in a love that leaves misery behind,
There is no good in a love that is lost
nor in a beloved with whom there is no union.
Nor in a lover who cannot be united
فَواso, alas! كَبِديmy liver إِنّيindeed I شُهِرتُI became known بِحُبِّهاfor loving her
فَوا كَبِدي إِنّي شُهِرتُ بِحُبِّها
وَلَمand not يَكُwas فيماin what بَينَناbetween us ساعَةًan hour بَذلُgiving
وَلَم يَكُ فيما بَينَنا ساعَةً بَذلُ
Alas for my liver! I have become known for loving her,
Oh my liver, I am known for my love of her
yet not for a single hour was any favor granted between us.
Yet between us there has not been a moment of intimacy
وَياand O عَجَباًwonder! إِنّيindeed I لَكاتِمُsurely concealing حُبِّهاlove for her
وَيا عَجَباً إِنّي لَكاتِمُ حُبِّها
وَقَدand already شاعَspread حَتّىuntil قُطِّعَتwere cut off دونَهاbefore reaching her السُبلُthe paths
وَقَد شاعَ حَتّى قُطِّعَت دونَها السُبلُ
And how strange! I am indeed concealing my love for her,
How strange, I conceal my love for her
yet it has spread abroad, until the paths to her were cut off.
Yet it has spread until because of her the paths are cut off
