حَتّى رَأَيتُ الظَبيَ بِالبابِ
Indeed, doom called me and led me on,
He called me, so I followed his lead
until I saw the gazelle at the door.
Until I saw the gazelle at the gate

مُستَتِراً عَنّي بِالجِلبابِ
Ah, how beautiful he was when he reviled me, turning away,
Oh, her beauty when she turned from me
hiding himself from me beneath the cloak.
Veiled from me in her cloak

Glory to her standing full of yearning

That poured into my heart in torrents

her father, who is no generous giver.
A father who is no permissive fool
