وتغرسُand plant وَردَroses الحُسنِbeauty فيin رَوضَةِthe garden الخَفَرbashfulness
Let the eye reap love where the gaze falls,
Let the eyes reap love from the site of looking,
and plant beauty’s roses in the garden of bashfulness.
And plant the roses of beauty in the garden of intimacy.
أمتعُهاI give it pleasure فيهin it فإنfor if تَكُthere be لوعةٌburning anguish
صَبرتُI endured وماand not ذمّblamed العواقبَthe outcomes مَنwhoever صَبَرendured
I let it take pleasure there; for if anguish arises,
Entertain her there, for if she becomes distressed,
I shall endure; none who endured ever blamed the outcome.
I have patience - and whoever is patient rarely blames the consequences.
فَتورُlanguor العيونِthe eyes النجلِwide يُطلَبُis sought بالهوىthrough love
وإنand if غفَلَwas heedless التفتيرُthe languid glance لمdid not يغفَلِbe heedless الحَوَرthe eyes’ dark-and-white contrast
The languor of wide eyes is sought through love,
The languor of the eyes of the gazelle is sought through love,
and if their languid glance is heedless, their dark-and-white beauty is not.
And if the blinking is inattentive, the glances are not inattentive.
وزائرةٍand a woman visitor والليلُand the night مُلقٍletting fall رواقَهُits canopy
ومنand from أينَwhere للظلماءِfor the darkness أنto تكتُمَconceal القَمَرthe moon
And a woman came visiting as night let fall its canopy—
A visitor, while the night spreads its porch,
and how could darkness conceal the moon?
And how can the darkness conceal the moon?

فياand oh حُسنَbeauty ماwhat انشقَّsplit open الكِمامُthe flower sheaths عنfrom الزَهَرthe blossoms
She lowered the veil of chastity from her cheek,
She lowered the veil of modesty from the page of her cheek -
and oh, how lovely when the flower sheaths split open to reveal the blossoms!
Oh, the beauty - how the veil splits from the flower!
وراودتُهاand I coaxed her عنfor لثمِهِkissing it فَتَمَنَّعَتbut she refused
وماand not عادةُthe habit الأغصانِthe branches أنto تَمنَعَwithhold الثَمَرthe fruit
And I coaxed her to let me kiss it, but she refused;
And I solicited a kiss from her, but she refused,
yet it is not the way of branches to withhold fruit.
And it is not the habit of branches to refuse fruit.

A gazelle-fawn—whenever my eyelids bloodied his cheek,
She sprinkled, whenever my eyelids were closed, his cheek -
he pointed at my heart with his eyes and took revenge.
He gestured to my heart with his eyes, so he succeeded.

My heart demands that I kiss his lips;
My heart demands that I kiss his lips -
it has indeed dived into beauty’s sea in search of pearls.
He has plunged into the sea of beauty for the pearls.
