ليت الشبابَ الذي ولت نضارتُهُ
أعطانِيgave me الحِلمَforbearance فيماamong what كانhad أعطانيgiven me
أعطانِي الحِلمَ فيما كان أعطاني
If only youth, whose freshness has faded,
Would that the youth whose bloom has passed me by
had given me forbearance among the things it gave me;
Had granted me the wisdom that it denied,
فلمthen not تكنwould be مِنةٌa debt of gratitude للشيبِto gray hair أحملُهاI bear it
فلم تكن مِنةٌ للشيبِ أحملُها
ولمand not يكنwould be منof سروريmy joy بعضُsome of أحزانيmy sorrows
ولم يكن من سروري بعضُ أحزاني
then I would owe gray hair no debt of gratitude,
For then old age was no unworthy load to bear,
nor would some of my sorrows be part of my joy.
Nor half so bitter the remembrance of delight.
