سأشكوI shall complain إلىto الندمانthe drinking companions خمرَthe wine of زجاجةٍa bottle
تردّتcloaked itself بثوبٍin a robe حالكِdark اللونِthe color أسحَمِjet-black
I shall complain to the drinking companions about the wine in a bottle
I will complain to the remorseful about the wine of a bottle
That has cloaked itself in a robe of dark, jet-black hue.
Whose dress fell in your dark, brownish color
نُصُبُّwe pour بهاinto it شَمسَthe sun of المُدامَةِthe wine بَينناamong us
فتغرُبُand so it sets فيin جُنحِa stretch منof الليلِthe night مُظلِمdark
We pour into it the sun of wine among us,
Between us we pour the sun of revelry
And so it sets in a dark stretch of night.
Then it sets into the darkness of night's wing
وتجحدُand it denies أنوارَthe lights of الحُمياthe strong wine بلونهاwith its color
كقلبِlike the heart of حسودٍan envious person جاحدٍdenying يدkindness (literally, hand) منعمa benefactor
And with its color it denies the radiance of strong wine,
And it denies the lights of embers with its color
Like the heart of an envious man denying a benefactor's kindness.
Like the heart of an envious ingrate, hand of a giver
