أيهاO العالِمُscholar ادّركنيcome to my aid سماحاًgenerously
فلِمِثليfor one like me يحقّis due منكfrom you السّماحُgenerosity
O scholar, come to my aid with generosity;
O wise one, grant me forgiveness
for one like me deserves your generosity.
For one like me deserves your forgiveness
إنif تَخَلنيyou deem me إذاwhen نَطَفتُI spoke (likely intended reading) عَيِبّاًtongue-tied (likely intended reading)
فَبَنانِيyet my fingers إذاwhen كَتَبتُI wrote وَقَاحُbold
If you deem me tongue-tied when I speak,
If I slip up with a misstep
yet my fingers, when I write, are bold.
Then guide me if I pen impudence
أُحرِزُI win الشَّأوthe race فِيin نِظامٍverse وَنَثرٍand prose
ثُمَّthen أَثنِيI turn back وفيand in العِنَانِthe reins جِماحُunruliness
I win the race in verse and prose,
I seek glory in prose and verse
then turn back, with unruliness in the reins:
Then I falter with reckless impetuousness
فَبِهَزلٍso, in jest كَمَاas تَأَوَّدَswayed غُصنٌa bough
وَبِجِدٍّand in earnest كماas تهَزُّare brandished الصِّفاحُthe sword-blades
so, in jest, as a bough sways,
So with jest as a branch sways gently
and in earnest, as blades are brandished.
And with gravity as blades clash violently
