O Commander of the Faithful, hear a servant’s plea,
Call of a servant to the Commander of the Faithful
Who chose right guidance over folly.
He chose guidance over ignorance
أَضَرَّcaused harm بهِto him الأَوامُburning thirst فَحامَso he circled وَهناًweakly
عَلَىaround الوِردِthe watering place المُرَوِّيthirst-quenching للشِّفاهِfor the lips
Burning thirst has stricken him, so he circles weakly
The times have weakened him, so he leans wearily
Around the watering place that quenches the lips.
Upon the rose watered for lips

And I have no hope except an exalted decree,
And he has no hope but the matter of the Almighty
With which I may vex the boaster and the rival,
With which I anger the boasters and pretentious

By raising me, in my property and earnings,
With my occupation in medicine and my acquisition
To a standing with which I may pursue my course.
Of prestige which I vie with

The letters of praise to God within it are snow,
Snows of letters praising God therein
Like marks of prostration upon foreheads,
Like traces of prostration on foreheads
بِخَطٍّin a script حارَتِwere bewildered الأَفكارُthe thoughts فِيهِin it
فَقَالتso they said خُطَّit was inscribed مِنfrom نُورِthe light الإِلَهِof God
In a script that has left minds bewildered,
In a script that confounded thoughts
So they said: ‘It was inscribed from the light of God.’
So they said the writing is from the light of God
فَدُمتُمso may you endure وَالخِلاَفَةُand the caliphate مِنamong حُلاَكُمyour adornments
إَلىto غَيرِno انصِرَامٍcessation فيat التَّنَاهِيthe ultimate limit
So may you endure, with the caliphate among your adornments,
So may you remain, with the Caliphate from your midst
Without cessation, even at the furthest limit.
Until there is no expiration in the limits
