قُلsay لِمَنto whoever سَالَasked عَنabout شَكَاتِيmy suffering وَحَالِيand my condition
لَستُI am not أَشكُوcomplaining of غَيرَother than الذُّنُوبِthe sins الثِّقَالِheavy
Say to the one who asks about my complaint and my state:
Say to whoever asked about my suffering and my condition:
I complain of nothing but the burden of grievous sins.
I complain of nothing but heavy sins.
لَيتَwould that شِعرِيmy knowledge وَهِيَand they are الجِبَالُthe mountains الرَّواسيfirmly rooted
مَنwho يُجرنيwill shield me مِنfrom صَعقِthe shock of هَدِّthe collapse of الجِبَالِthe mountains
If only I knew: could the firmly rooted mountains
Would that I knew—they are mountains firmly rooted—
be what shields me from the shock when the mountains collapse?
who will shield me from the shock of the mountains’ collapse?
وَهيَand they are دَائيmy ailment ولَيسَand there is not لِيfor me مِنany دَوَاءٍremedy
غَيرُexcept صَفحٍpardon لِذيof the Possessor of الرِّضَىfavor والجَلاَلِand majesty
They are my sickness, and I have no remedy
They are my ailment, and I have no remedy
except pardon from the Lord of Mercy and Majesty.
except pardon from the Lord of favor and majesty.
فَإِذَاso if مِتُّI die مُسلماًas a Muslim فانتقَاليthen my departure
منfrom مَحلِّthe abode of الغُرورِdelusion خَيرُthe best انتِقَالشdeparture
So if I die a Muslim, then my departure
So if I die a Muslim, then my departure
from this abode of delusion is the best of passages.
from the abode of delusion is the best of departures.
وإِذَاand if كَانَis لِلإِلاهَfor God مَرَادِيmy desire
لاَnot أُباليI care مِنabout مِيتَةٍa manner of death لاَnot أُبَالِيI care
And if God is the object of my desire,
And if my desire is for God,
I care nothing about my death—I care nothing.
I do not care how I die; I do not care.
إِنَّindeed ظَنِّيmy expectation بِاللهِof God ظَنٌan expectation جَمِيلٌgood
وَهَوَand He حَسبِيsufficient for me فِيin مَبدَإbeginning وَمَآلِand end
Truly, my expectation of God is a beautiful hope,
Indeed, my expectation of God is a good one,
and He suffices me at my beginning and my final return.
and He suffices me in beginning and end.
