Recite—may you be ransomed—to Abu Hafs, our master,
a verse, for it discloses the secret of the situation:
كَفاكwould suffice you نيلٌa Nile ومِصرٌand an Egypt أرضthe land of شاطِبَةٍShatiba
كَفاك نيلٌ ومِصرٌ أرض شاطِبَةٍ
لوif لَمnot يكنthere were فيin عُبابthe surging waters of النيلthe Nile تِمسَاحُa crocodile
لو لَم يكن في عُباب النيل تِمسَاحُ
Shatiba’s land—a Nile and an Egypt—would suffice you,
if there were no crocodile in the Nile’s surging waters.
