يَاO وَيحَwoe to نَفسِيmy soul مَاذاwhat قَبلُpreviously قَدalready كَسبتُI earned
مِنَof المَآثِمِsins فِيin بَدوٍdesert country وَفيand in حَضرِsettled country
Alas for my soul! What have I earned in the past
Of sins, in desert and in town,
وَفِيand in الظَّلامِthe darkness وَسترُwhile the veil of اللَّيلthe night مُنسدِلٌhanging down
وَفيand in النَّهارِdaylight عَلَىunder سِترٍcover مِنَfrom البَشرَpeople
And in darkness, while the veil of night hung down,
And in daylight, concealed from people's eyes!
فَحَيثُso where مَاever كُنتُI was مِنin رَبعٍa dwelling وَمَجهَلةٍand a trackless waste
نَظرتُI saw مِنfrom فِعِليmy deeds الفَحشَاءَwickedness فِيin الأَثِرthe traces
So wherever I was, in a dwelling or a trackless waste,
I saw wickedness in the traces left by my deeds.
لَكَّنِنِيbut I أَسأَلُI ask الرَّحمَانَthe All-Merciful مَغفِرةًforgiveness
تَمحُوwipes away الذُّنُوبَthe sins الَّتيthat قَدَّمتُI sent ahead فِيin عُمُرِيmy lifetime
But I ask the All-Merciful for forgiveness
That wipes away the sins I sent ahead in my lifetime,
تَأتِيcomes قُبَيلَjust before لِقَاءِmeeting with اللهِGod خَالِصَةًpure
كَمَاjust as أَتَىcame رَبَّهُhis Lord مُوسىَMoses عَلَىat قَدَرِan appointed time
Coming pure just before the meeting with God,
As Moses came to his Lord at the appointed time.
