And far, far away, [perhaps through] Time's vicissitudes and its wind—
Alas! The winds of time and its vicissitudes
A northerly wind that cast me into a southern wilderness.
Have cast their unhappy fortunes towards Yemen
أَمَوئِلَنَاO our refuge الأَسمَىloftiest حَنَانكyour mercy إِننيindeed I
وَحِيدٌalone وَمَرمِيّand cast بِيَwith me الرَّجَوَانthe two sides
O our loftiest refuge, grant your mercy, for I am
My most sublime wishes, your affection, I am
Alone, tossed from side to side.
Lonely and deprived of all hopes
وَقَدand already سَدّدhas aimed الدَّهرُTime الخَئُونُtreacherous لِمَقتَليto kill me
سِنَانِيtwo spearheads هِيَاجٍof turmoil فِيin زَمَانِa time of أَمَانِsafety
And treacherous Time has aimed, to kill me,
Fate has armed my enemies against me
Two spearheads of turmoil in a time of safety:
The fangs of slander in an age of safety
سِنَانَa spearhead لِسَانٍof a tongue فِيin تَعَقُّبِpursuing سَعِيهِits endeavor
وَآخَرand another مِنfrom تَسدِيدِthe aiming of عَارِيone devoid of بَيَانeloquence
A tongue's spearhead in pursuit of its purpose,
The fangs of a tongue tracking its prey
And another aimed by one devoid of eloquence.
And another sharpening naked slander
فَسَهمَانِso two arrows فِيin قَلبِيmy heart وَقَلبِيَand my heart وَاحِدٌone
وَلَوand if كَانَit had been سَهماًan arrow وَاحِداًone لَكَفَانِيit would surely have sufficed me
So two arrows are in my heart, and my heart is one;
Two arrows in my heart though it is but one
And had there been a single arrow, it would have sufficed me.
If one arrow pierced it, it would suffice
فَفُكُواso loosen إِسَارِيmy bonds مِنfrom إِحَالَةِa transfer of debt by مُعسِرٍan insolvent man
فَإِنِّيfor indeed I وَرَبِّby the Lord of المَكرُمَاتِnoble deeds لَعَانِindeed a captive
So free me from my bonds over an insolvent man's transfer of debt;
So remove my shackles with some relief
For, by the Lord of noble deeds, I am indeed a captive.
By God of Bounty, I am wretched
