White in hue, with trailing, gossamer robes,
And a white blossom, its fine robes oleander-like,
mantles woven by December and January lie upon it.
Upon it are cloaks woven by the two Kanuns.

Whoever beholds it says, “Glory be to its Creator!
Its beholder says, “Glory be to its Creator!
How has it alone laid claim to such beauty?”
How could single blossoms bear such beauty?”

It comes visiting before the blossoms have opened their bud-sheaths,
It visits while the blossoms’ bud-sheaths have not yet opened,
with no appointed time announced for its visit.
Nor was its visit preceded by an appointed time.

It is like a scout, or one ascending the uplands,
As though it were a scout, or one ascending the heights,
or a commander with the many kinds of blossoms as his troops.
Or a commander, with the various blossoms as troops.

The peach tree imitates it in the beauty of its bloom—
The peach has modeled itself on it in the beauty of its blossoms.
O people, even among the trees there are enviers!
O people, there are enviers even among the trees!

A blossom that alone has carried off the racecourse prize,
A blossom that alone has won the racecourse’s prize reed,
just as ʿAbbād has carried off the trophies of victory:
As ʿAbbād has won the reeds of victory:

he who charges the cavalry head-on while lances are leveled at him,
Who spears the cavalry, pressing forward, though the lances are shattered,
the sword bared and the spear bending;
And the sword is broken, and the spear is bent;

And who kindles fire generously for guests, although
every sought-for resource has run dry, and baggage and provisions have dwindled.
What is sought has dried up, and baggage and provisions have grown light.
