فيمن تحب ومن آمالها سخروا
They led the girl as a bride to a wealthy man, despite her longing
They marched the maiden to one she did not want
for the one she loves, and they mocked her hopes.
Though her heart belonged to another, her hopes they flouted

وَالطرس من فضة والبشر ينتشر
They recorded the dower; the writing was of gold,
Steps of gold they made in pretense of kinship
and the parchment was of silver, and joy spread.
With gems of silver, while people looked on overjoyed

But after a while, they inscribed in blood
Yet after awhile in blood they wrote
the divorce deed. Hear this, O people, and take warning!
The writ of divorce - O people, take heed!
