وَجبنا لدى الشكوى التَحاشي من الجهر
The oppression the people endure is tyranny enough;
The people have suffered enough oppression and injustice
and shunning open speech when complaining is cowardice enough.
We had to whisper our complaints, avoiding loud protests
صبرناwe endured عَلىupon مسthe touch of الاذىharm لجسومناto our bodies
صبرنا عَلى مس الاذى لجسومنا

وَمذ ادرك الأَرواح ملنا عَن الصبر
We endured harm touching our bodies;
We were patient despite the harm done to our bodies
and once it reached our souls, we turned away from patience.
But when it became too much for our souls, we lost patience

And when we learned our duty today, we were thought
When we realized our duty today, we thought
by the sons of the West not to know that duty today.
The West would understand this duty, but we did not know

We loosed an arrow into life, only
We shot an arrow into life, only to see
to see it lodged in their breast.
It embedded in their chests, freshly bloodied

So they rose like the wrathful and roared,
They rose up angrily, roaring threats
and poured upon us a torrent of terror and rebuke.
Showering us with terrifying deterrents

Then a star blazed on the political horizon,
A star sparkled on the political horizon
in Bizerte—a lasting source of misery, forever remembered.
Bizerte remains, defying tyranny, eternally remembered

We see embodied in the Gafsa incident
and a river of innocent blood flowing through it.
A river of innocent blood flowing

Oh how hunger has unsheathed its claws!

When they untie their waist-wraps, you see them as skeletons
When they enter the workshops, the pillars
whose supports give way, ready to fall and collapse.
Collapse from their footsteps and shouts

They stretch out a hand whose softness the axe has withered
They stretch out hands, hardened by picks
toward wages, yet wages are beyond reach.
Seeking wages, but wages are out of reach

Thus they went on strike; a strike is a mount
So they went on strike, for strikes are
toward justice that knows no slowness on the road.
A path to rights, never halting or slow

So capital thundered, and its rage grew fierce,
The head of capital trembled with rage
and it donned the garb of vanity and pride.
Dressing himself in wonder and arrogance

It delivered its command to the government's ears;
Whispering orders in the government's ear
and how could the government overlook that command?
I despise such commands!

So it withdrew its hand of steel from them, and was tempted
So the iron hand lashed out against them
by its own soul to subdue them with the hand of force.
Believing it could subdue them by force

And it dictated its revelation to the keeper of order:
And it urged those guarding the peace, giving them
to subjugate them; he quivered with sheer delight.
Orders to crush the people, shaking with anger

Soon the cavalry was prepared
and swiftly he headed for the town at once.
And the country's mother wept immediately

He tried to resolve the dispute by controlling them

But failed to achieve this by force

So he acted rashly on signal
to his aides, which brought on evil.
To his men, harbingers of evil

So they lost no time in opening fire, despite what
They soon ignited fires, despite seeing
they saw of the wretched people's inclination toward peace.
The wretched leaning towards peace

A grinding war churned against them

The situation was most dreadful

And in every heart is burning grief at your loss,
Should I complain to someone? Or should we extend
and on the page of history, line upon line.

To whom shall we complain? Or shall we stretch out our hands
We have labored to build palaces for masters
in our homelands, abased, toward bitter colocynth?
Whose orders are: Do not approach the palace!

And from our toil, palaces are built for masters
Do they not know we have long gazed upon the soil?
whose commands are: Do not approach the palace grounds.

Do they not know that we have gazed at the dust
Those who were their slaves yesterday
so often, and that today we gaze at the full moon?
Have today turned fierce as lions

And that those who yesterday were their slaves
Let them be as they wish, for we have known
have become, to the noble-hearted, the image of the free?
The way of good from the way of evil

عرفنا سَبيل الشر من سبل الخير
Indeed, let them be as they wish, for we
Neither fire will deter us, nor embers
have learned to tell evil's path from the paths of good.
Extinguish the flame if added to embers

So fire will not turn us back, nor are embers fit
It is enough for peace of mind to be assured
to quench a fire if they add them to the embers.
