Take my hand—alas! My breast has been filled

With calamities that came from places I know and do not know.

I entered the thick of war, with justice plain,

And left it with justice now in the grave.

I stretched my hand toward peace, and thereupon

Calamities began heaping every woe upon my back.

I am the East; it is enough to have at my side

Aid from God, so I may return with victory.

    I was naïve when the millstone of battle was set turning;

I am naïve? No—by God, I am not naïve.

So what is my sin, O sky, and what is it

I have done, to become a morsel for the roc and the vulture?

And I remember myself enjoying lofty attainments,

And I remember myself in perfection and ease.

Do all the countries of the earth aspire

To make me drink a cup of bitter colocynth?

Do they hope for my death so they may live happily

On earth for a month, or a day of that month?

Then no, and no! It is not so easy, in this fashion,

For my life to wither without sin or guilt.

Nor is it easy to shatter my spreading tree

With an axe that comes from deception and guile.

Is one like me deserving of humiliation and misery,

When my body holds the spirit of honor and pride?

Can one like me become a slave? That is astonishing!

And where, then, is one who has reached the station of a free man?

Can I become a captive while my eye

Beholds the freedom of birds in their nests?

Then send down upon me thunderbolts of wrath,

For death is better to me than that captivity.

Then burn me, O sky, with a downpour

Of fire—for fire is the lesser harm.

But no! By the One who raised you, do not be hasty,

Even if my journey today follows a rugged path.

I shall show you the proof—be patient, for I am

Harder than rock when the time comes.

I shall make my cherished heroes a girdle,

Encircling this land—how blessed is this land!

I shall write across this expanse in letters

Of fire: toward glory, or the abyss of subjugation.

And enough as proof is that in the East there is an ember

Which may today scorn being quenched by a downpour.

It blazes with souls in which wrath has settled,

And but for that wrath, it would leave us no heart within the breast.

    Am I not—tell me—am I not the one

By whom the world is lit until the break of dawn?

Am I not the one from whom every faith's

Spark flew forth to land and sea?

Am I not the one whose right hand shook yours,

While those in the universe journeyed beneath us by night?

Yes—and when my misery leaves us,

Then there must be a return to that age.

So stretch out a hand and welcome me, for I

Quicken my pace toward you—rather, I am running.

My first beloved, long has stretched between us

The time of separation; do you recall time's serenity?

And the time has come to meet you, with smiling lips,

And how many joys are mine in those lips!

Listen, O Easterner! Is there any feeling

That stirs that heart? Enough of terror!

And is there, in these calamities, anything to rouse you?

And have you any excuse amid the dark calamities?

Strive toward the blue dome, toward the sky,

Toward a seat among its radiant stars.

Cling to the means of lofty attainment, for

Only to you do the heights show favor, not to others.

And sever a hand that has begun cutting with knives

Your heart—O God, what a deed!

It is supreme heedlessness; its peril has worsened,

So loss has befallen you through it—how great is this loss!

It is the great bewilderment: either it must vanish,

Or the East must vanish in a flowering bough [wording uncertain].

So say, O human being: are you resentful?

And are you content? Whatever your state, you suffer loss.

Take this poetry and read; in poetry there is wisdom,

And if you do not act, then woe to me for my poetry!
