لَدى عادل يدري الخَفايا وَيحسب
Stay where you are, O West, for you will be called to account
O West, your place will be held to account
before a just one who knows the hidden things and keeps account.
Before a just judge who knows secrets and reckons
وَلاand do not تجرحنever wound ياO غربWest للشرقthe East's خاطِراheart
وَلا تجرحن يا غرب للشرق خاطِرا
فَفيfor in كلevery يومday للزمانtime has تقلبa reversal
فَفي كل يوم للزمان تقلب
And do not wound the East's heart, O West,
And do not, O West, hurt the East in spirit
for time turns anew each day.
For time overturns in each day

جَميلا فَتَطويه الرياح فَيجدب
Have you not seen that the earth brings forth its growth,
Have you not seen that the earth brings forth her vegetation
beautiful, then the winds fold it away and barrenness follows?
Beautifully then the winds fold it and it withers

Yet it refuses humiliation in this way:
But it refuses humiliation in this way
so it brings forth growth, spreading it out, and fights.
So it brings forth growth again and resists

We deemed you, when you were in the cradle, a fountainhead
You sufficed us when you were a fountain in the cradle
for the freedom of the lands, if it were to be bestowed.
Of freedom for countries, if they are granted

We served you in that battle, and cloaked were
We served you in that turmoil and you wore
the garments of humankind in blood as it poured forth.
The clothes of innocence, from blood while it pours

And we have in it nothing, as it is, a she-camel
nor a he-camel to pursue as it fled.
Nor a camel we hasten to while it escapes

But we came to you when you promised us

And we said, may God forbid you were lying

We have had enough! We have become bare bones, and were deceived by
Enough of us, we have become Iraq and our minds
the phantom of the sun's spittle, while the gullible one plays.
Deceived by mirage, playing tricks of the sun

And the putrid washings of flesh have flowed upon the soil,
The washing of the dead has flowed on the ground
and moss has covered it as time wore on.
And it has drowned in grief as moss grew

So that one is in pain, and this one, as you see,
This one is hurt and that one, as you see
and both are mourned for their lot and themselves lament.
Both are scarred by fortune and mourning

And this one sips water while the water is sweet
a drinking companion to this one, a cupbearer and a drinker.
A companion to this one, gave drink and sipped

If this age is an age of ease,
If this is the age of luxury
then where is the East's share, while the East is weary?
Then where is the ease of the East and the East is weary

And I with rising am like it
when it is only tormented in chains?
Yet it is just in chains and tortured

The poor wretch has crashed; it is a small band
The poor wretch has smashed as he whimpered
within the world, but the foxes have torn it apart.
From the universe, but the foxes tore it apart

He groans with no burdens as his head grayed
yet in the prime of life, this head is gray.
And in the prime of life that head is graying

Arrows that cause pain have wearied the East enough;
Enough of the East's affliction, arrows that hurt
their ravages make the healthy bleed and cripple them.
Their shafts wound the healthy and cripple

Have erased in him the lights, bringing darkness

So be, O enlightened West, our leader
toward good, for both lands share those consequences.
To good, for the lands have those consequences

And O East, stand up, follow your friend, and take heed:
And O East, stand still and follow your friend and learn
for how long will you toss and turn on beds of misery?
For surely in the carpet of thorns you will toss and turn

And open your cocoon for sleep brings no benefit
and it is nothing but illness and calamities.
And it is nothing but disease and misfortunes
