You have bestowed on me nothing but calamities,

while I have desired none but you in love.

    O abode—may God protect you!—to

love of you my soul is bound, as my spirit to the body.

How gentle the atmosphere, how pure the air!

How sweet it is, in its shortened and lengthened forms!

In you there is musk in the morning breeze, or

a wind blows at evening, and then comes foam.

Everything in you is beautiful; and when

was a beautiful one said to have escaped an envier?

No, by my Lord, while I am in my grief—

can a man be called a crown amid grief?

O people, it is honor enough for me

that you see me as a servant, like one who strives.

No Friday turns aside my resolve,

    no, nor Saturday, nor Sunday.

How can you find me lazy, when I am

between earnest effort and toil, never forgetting you?

One content with death in ease is not

like one content with life in misery.

Whenever I let my gaze roam, it stirred

a flame already burning in the midst of my heart.

It moved me, and then I

knew no bounds in lamenting my lot.

The innards and pains become, in

the arena of illusions, caught in give-and-take.

What recourse have I? I have been shaken

by the command 'Hush!'—or, if I spoke, they said, 'Do not repeat it.'

To glory: 'Do not draw near!'; to good fortune: 'Do not

come close!'; to goodness: 'O goodness, keep away!'

These are the voices of those you think

are your helpers; so listen to them and judge critically.

You do not know which of them—by God—in

his home has not encountered some calamities.

His heart, his mouth, his two hands, his eye:

palpitating, complaining, fit for fetters, inflamed.

These are the traits of the one you put forward

to help you; today he is a bitter adversary.

    أَو بلفظ فَبِصاع وَبمد

    Idle, never bringing forth a deed;

but as for words, by the sāʿ and the mudd!

The truly intrepid one is he who never yields,

and is always preparing himself for dangers.

This alone is the brave man; indeed,

he looks like a lion whenever he appears.

    Long have we cried out, but into empty air;

who seeks his attention when he turns away?

    او افقناه تغطي ورقد

    Whenever we gave him more counsel, he blamed us;

or, if we roused him, he covered himself and slept.

Thus the suffering in you grew, and here

I am, reciting: 'Say: He is God, One.'

Here I am, truly weeping for you, just as

    Jacob lamented a missing son.

yet its fang is in your liver.

My homeland, I weep for you; bear witness on the day when neither

wealth nor children will be of any avail.

My homeland, I weep for you, but perhaps

a voice—you will weep for me tomorrow or the day after.
