Yes, my masters, in you and through you, sweet to me are

My union and estrangement, my coming together and separation.

From love of you, I desire torment for your sake,

Even if, in you, I attain my wish through my death.

Were it not for you, love and its delight would not exist.

And what is my aspiration? But for you, I would have cast it aside.

And how sweet my intimacy is—except that I have died in you.

And my joy is nothing but my soul's undoing.

Through you, and for you, in you, upon you, and from you,

And your refutation within my proof is other than my own proof.

So at times, through you, I live; at times, through you, I die.

And at times, through you, as a spirit; at times, in my body.

When you will something, there is nothing other than you.

And my coming into being would not be mine but for your rapture.

From your command came my obedience to your command,

And from your prohibition came restraint upon my desire.

And 'You alone we worship' is the foundation of pure sacred law,

And 'You alone, my Lord, we ask for help' is spiritual reality.

So in negation lies the denial of all but you, without dispute,

And after it, affirmation is the foundation of my certainty.

So say 'No' and pause—'except a deity'—in submission.

So raise a canopy, for this is the foundation of every creed.

The veil of all else—from it came affliction, from nothing else.

And loathing comes only from the station of my nature.

From the secret of the sīn of intimacy came my happiness,

And from the shīn of the self's evil came the herald of my misery.

Had you not answered me, I would have had no prayer.

So turn toward me in mercy, that I may attain repentance.
