قديمold عهدكyour bond نعمرهwe revive it بتجديدthrough renewal
When, when, O gazelle of Aydid’s ravine,
When, when will you return, beloved people,
shall we revive our old bond with you anew?
Your ancient covenant we will renew,
عسىmay عسىmay اللَهGod ياO غزيلlittle gazelle البيدthe desert wastes
يعودbring back ماwhat قدalready فاتناpassed us by بتأكيدwith certainty
May, may God, O little gazelle of the desert wastes,
Perhaps, perhaps O deer of the wasteland,
surely restore what has passed us by.
What we have missed will return confirmed,
رعياmay there be protection لذاكfor that الربعthe dwelling والمنازلand the abodes
ومنand whoever بهاتيكin those الربوعdwelling places نازلdwells
May that dwelling and those abodes be protected,
Tending to that land and its dwellings,
and whoever dwells in those quarters.
And from those meadows descending,
متىwhen متىwhen محبوبناour beloved يواصلgrants union
فذاكthen that يومday العيدthe feast نعمhow excellent منof عيدa feast
When, when will our beloved grant us union?
When, when will our beloved continue,
Then that will be the feast day—what a feast!
For that day of celebration, yes a celebration,
عليشwhy تهجرyou forsake ياO حبيبbeloved صبكyour lovesick lover
وتحرمهand you deny him وصلكunion with you وطيبand the sweetness of قربكyour nearness
Why do you forsake, O beloved, your lovesick lover,
Do not abandon, O beloved, your morning draught
and deny him union with you and the sweetness of your nearness?
And deprive it of your sweet company,
أعوذI seek refuge باللَهin God منfrom شديدthe fierceness of حربكyour warfare
كمhow many طاحfell بهthrough it منof جيدa fine man يعشقloves passionately الجيدthe neck
I seek refuge in God from your fierce warfare.
I seek refuge in God from your intense separation,
How many a fine man has fallen to it, enamored of a neck!
Many excellent ones have fallen for the excellent.
