مقام السماع مقام شريف

بصحب وزمر وموضع نظيف

بصحب وزمر وموضع نظيف

The station of spiritual listening is a noble station,

The gathering of spiritual auditory is noble,

With companions, piping, and a clean place.

With companionship, chanting and a pure place,

لنا فيه يا صاح معنى لطيف

لنا فيه يا صاح معنى لطيف

يقيم اللطيف ويفنى الكثيف

يقيم اللطيف ويفنى الكثيف

For us, O friend, it holds a subtle meaning:

For us there, O friend, is a subtle meaning,

The subtle abides, and the dense passes away.

The Subtle remains and the dense passes away.

تظنّ السماع سماع الدفوف

تظنّ السماع سماع الدفوف

أو ان التصوّف لباسك لصوف

أو ان التصوّف لباسك لصوف

Do you think spiritual listening means hearing frame drums,

You may think spiritual auditory is beating drums,

Or that Sufism is your wearing wool,

Or that Sufism is to wear wool,

او الوجد هو التصديه بالكفوف

او الوجد هو التصديه بالكفوف

فلا يعتقد ذاك الا سخيف

فلا يعتقد ذاك الا سخيف

Or that ecstasy is clapping with the palms?

Or that spiritual ecstasy is to clap hands,

So none but a fool believes that.

Whoever believes so is foolish.

سماع الرجال شهود وحال

سماع الرجال شهود وحال

بحقّ اليقين ونفي المحال

بحقّ اليقين ونفي المحال

The listening of the adepts is witnessing and a spiritual state,

The spiritual auditory of men is witnessing and state,

With the truth of certainty and rejection of the impossible,

With truth of certainty and denial of impossibility,

بشوق وقلق لمعنى الجمال

بشوق وقلق لمعنى الجمال

وقلب تقيّ وجسم عفيف

وقلب تقيّ وجسم عفيف

With longing and restlessness for the meaning of beauty,

With longing and worry for the meaning of Beauty,

And a pious heart and a chaste body.

And a pious heart and chaste body.

وكلّ التواجد سوى ذا حرام

وكلّ التواجد سوى ذا حرام

بنصّ الشيوخ الفحول الكرام

بنصّ الشيوخ الفحول الكرام

And all induced ecstasy other than this is forbidden,

And all finding except this is prohibited,

By the express words of the eminent, noble masters,

According to the respected and noble Shaykhs,

كراعي العوارف وعالي المقام

كراعي العوارف وعالي المقام

قشيري الرساله وكم من منيف

قشيري الرساله وكم من منيف

Such as the master of al-ʿAwārif and the exalted in station—

The shepherds of the gnostics and the highly ranked,

Qushayri of al-Risālah—and many an eminent man.

Qushayri the teacher, and many like An-Niffari.
