Tell me, O Nur, how they fare,
Tell me, O light, how are they
The neighbors who settled at Thahmad.
Sweet neighbors with melodious voices

بين نبت الشيح والرند
Do they keep the pledge, east of their wild lote trees,
Are they still lost in the east wind
Amid the growth of wormwood and laurel?
Between the aromatic plants and trees

ما يراعوا صبّ معمد
What ails them—oh, my bewilderment—what is wrong with them?
What is with them, O my confusion, how are they
They show no care for a tormented, lovesick lover.
They don't heed the baptizing rain

وكفاني البعد والصدّ
May the Merciful hasten my reunion with them,
May the Merciful hasten their return to me
And spare me separation and rejection.
For separation and avoidance is enough

Absent from me, yet present,
Their absence is a presence
At evening and at daybreak.
In the evening and at dawn

Whether they honor the claim of this frail, love-stricken one,
If they heed the rights of the weak who seek refuge
Or prolong their absence,
Or lengthen the distances in the wilderness

Here I remain, faithful to the pledge,
And the conditions of affection
And to the terms of affection.

Rather, my passion is increasing
Rather, my passion keeps growing.

I wish the tread of their sandals were
Upon the cheeks and eyelids
Upon the surface of my eyelid and cheek.

When they are pleased and delighted
When they are pleased—and gladness too.

My heart, do not grieve over separation.
For ease comes after hardship
Indeed, after hardship comes ease twice over.

That would soothe the heart and eye
That soothes the heart and eye,

And I take shelter in their honor and their shade—
The glory of the best of mankind, Ahmad
The honor of Ahmad, the best of creation.

We prevent all evil
We are spared all evils.
