My pigeons of love
The night of union with you is a night of spoils.
The night of our union was a night of treasures
كيفhow تباتyou spend the night نائمasleep
كيف تبات نائم
وإذاand when سويهرa little wakeful one فيin رجاكhope of you قائمstanding
وإذا سويهر في رجاك قائم
How can you spend the night asleep,
How can you sleep
When a little night-watcher stands hoping for you?
While Suhayr is awake hoping for you
ومنand among الظلائمthe injustices
ومن الظلائم
تركتنيyou left me ياO خلّdear friend فيكover you هائمwandering in love
تركتني يا خلّ فيك هائم
And among the injustices—
And from the darknesses
You left me, dear friend, lost in love with you.
You left me wandering, crazed with love for you
كيفhow لاnot تلائمyou be in accord with
كيف لا تلائم
منone who ليسdoes not يسمعheed فيكconcerning you لومthe reproach of لائمa reproacher
من ليس يسمع فيك لوم لائم
How can you not be in accord with
How can you not sympathize
One who heeds no reproacher's blame concerning you?
With one who hears no blame from a blamer
واموردO rose-hued one الخدthe cheek
وامورد الخد
ماwhat الذنبthe fault تنكرyou deny صحبتيmy companionship وتجحدand you disavow
ما الذنب تنكر صحبتي وتجحد
O rosy-cheeked one,
O cheeks like roses
What is my fault, that you deny and disown my companionship?
What was my crime that you deny me and reject me
قطever حدّثكspoke to you حدّanyone
قط حدّثك حدّ
عنيabout me فماso what هذاthis السببthe reason لذيfor this الصدّthe turning away
عني فما هذا السبب لذي الصدّ
Has anyone ever spoken to you
Has anyone ever told you
About me? What, then, is the cause of this turning away?
Anything about me, what is the reason for this rejection
والشهودand the witnesses تشهدtestify
والشهود تشهد
عليّagainst me أناI عبدa slave قبضheld captive فيin اليدthe hand
عليّ أنا عبد قبض في اليد
And the witnesses testify
And the witnesses testify
Against me: I am a slave held captive in the hand.
That I am a slave caught in your hand
للجفاfor estrangement علائمsigns
للجفا علائم
لولاwere it not for الجفاestrangement ماnot اصغيتyou listened للنمائمto slanderous tales
لولا الجفا ما اصغيت للنمائم
Estrangement has its signs:
The signs of aloofness are clear
Were it not for estrangement, you would not have heeded slander.
If not for your aloofness, I would not have listened to slanderers
ياO مكحلkohl-lined العينthe eye
يا مكحل العين
حيدrock عينيmy eye قدhas جرتflowed لهاfor it عينa spring
حيد عيني قد جرت لها عين
O kohl-eyed one,
O kohl in my eyes
O rock of my eye, a spring has flowed from it,
Withdraw your eyes which have caused eyes to watch me
منfrom مراميthe darts of البينseparation
من مرامي البين
ونمتand spread malicious tales الحسادthe envious بينناbetween us بينseparation
ونمت الحساد بيننا بين
From the darts of separation.
With the arrows of separation
And the envious have spread tales, bringing separation between us.
And the envious have slept between us, between
وامليحO lovely one وازينO beautiful one
وامليح وازين
لاdo not تفسدspoil الزّينthe beauty المليحthe lovely بالشينwith ugliness
لا تفسد الزّين المليح بالشين
O lovely one, O beautiful one,
O beautiful and good
Do not mar lovely beauty with ugliness.
Do not spoil the good looks with evil
ايشwhat منkind of جرائمcrimes
ايش من جرائم
كثرتhave multiplied فيin الدعوىthe accusation وفيand in الخصائمthe disputes
كثرت في الدعوى وفي الخصائم
What crimes
What crimes
Have multiplied amid accusations and disputes?
Have multiplied in claims and disputes
شاI shall اغتنمmake the most of زمانيmy time
شا اغتنم زماني
ماnot فادنيbenefited me فيin عشقةloving الغوانيthe beautiful women
ما فادني في عشقة الغواني
I shall make the most of my time;
Take advantage of my time
Loving fair women has done me no good.
Loving the flirtatious did not benefit me
والذيand the one who جفانيshunned me
والذي جفاني
شاI shall أنساهforget him عنfrom قلبيmy heart وعنand from لسانيmy tongue
شا أنساه عن قلبي وعن لساني
And the one who shunned me,
And the one who was unkind to me
I shall forget him—out of my heart and off my tongue.
I will forget him from my heart and my tongue
وأمدحand I praise اليمانيthe Yemeni
وأمدح اليماني
خيرthe best of البراياcreated beings كاملperfect in المعانيthe inner qualities
خير البرايا كامل المعاني
And praise the Yemeni,
And I will praise the faithful one
The best of creation, perfect in all his qualities,
The best of creations, perfect in meaning
ناقضbreaker of العزائمfirm resolves
ناقض العزائم
المرتجىthe one hoped for فيat الحشرthe Gathering للعظائمfor great calamities
المرتجى في الحشر للعظائم
Breaker of firm resolves,
Breaker of resolves
The one hoped for at the Gathering in the face of great calamities.
The hoped for on the day of judgment of the greatest
ذاthis نبيa prophet مفضلfavored
ذا نبي مفضل
أحمدAhmad رسولthe messenger of اللَهGod خيرthe best مرسلone sent
أحمد رسول اللَه خير مرسل
This is a favored prophet:
That preferred prophet
Ahmad, God's Messenger, the best of those sent,
Ahmed, the messenger of Allah, the best sent
الذيthe one who توسلsought mediation
الذي توسل
بهthrough him النبيونthe prophets آخراlast وأوّلand first
به النبيون آخرا وأوّل
The one whose mediation was sought
The one through whom
By the prophets, last and first.
The prophets of the past and first prayed
وعليهand upon him المعوّلreliance
وعليه المعوّل
للمسلمينfor the Muslims يشفعhe intercedes لهمfor them فيقبلso he is accepted
للمسلمين يشفع لهم فيقبل
And upon him reliance is placed;
And the relied upon
He intercedes for Muslims, and his intercession is accepted.
To intercede for the Muslims and be accepted
درّةpearl آلthe house of هاشمHashim
درّة آل هاشم
لهupon him الصلاةblessings ثمthen السلامpeace دائمeverlasting
له الصلاة ثم السلام دائم
The pearl of the House of Hashim,
Jewel of the Hashemites
Blessings upon him, then peace, forever.
May prayers and peace be upon him always
