بواديin the valley of الجرعاءal-Jar‘a’ خيرbest وادvalley
بوادي الجرعاء خير واد
Pass on to those I love,
Bestow upon those I love
in the valley of al-Jar‘a’, the best of valleys.
The valley of Jerf is the best valley
ذاكthat فيهin it قصديmy aim
ذاك فيه قصدي
وغايةand the ultimate goal المطلوبwhat is sought والمرادand what is desired
وغاية المطلوب والمراد
There lies my aim,
For that is my intent
and the goal of all I seek and desire.
The ultimate goal and purpose
لوif رزقتI had been granted سعديmy good fortune
لو رزقت سعدي
لساعدتنيshe would surely have helped me باللقاwith the meeting سعادSu‘ad
لساعدتني باللقا سعاد
Had I been granted good fortune,
If you grant me joy
Su‘ad would have favored me with a meeting.
You would help me meet happiness
ياO بريقlightning-flash قلsay ليto me
يا بريق قل لي
هلdid ...? جادpoured generously هطالكyour downpour علىupon المنازلthe dwellings
هل جاد هطالك على المنازل
O lightning-flash, tell me:
O sparkle, tell me
has your rain poured generously upon the dwellings?
Did your downpour fall on the dwellings?
أوor رأيتyou saw خليmy beloved
أو رأيت خلي
بقاعةon the plain of الوعساal-Wa‘sa هناكthere نازلcamped
بقاعة الوعسا هناك نازل
Or have you seen my beloved,
Or did you see my tribesman
camped there on the plain of al-Wa‘sa?
In the land of Al-Wasa there settling?
ربّLord لفّgather together شمليmy company
ربّ لفّ شملي
بشملهwith his company فالجودfor the bounty منكfrom You شاملall-embracing
بشمله فالجود منك شامل
Lord, reunite me
Lord, unite me
with him, for Your bounty is all-embracing.
With them, for your kindness is all encompassing
ماno وجدlonging كوجديlike my longing
ما وجد كوجدي
ولاnor بعدseparation عاشقa lover’s كماlike بعاديmy separation
ولا بعد عاشق كما بعادي
There is no longing like mine,
None can match my fervor
nor any lover’s separation like my own.
Nor any lover as intense as my ardency
لاmay ... never برحتyou cease تلمعyou shine

يا برق في وادي شعيب لعلع
May you never cease to shine;
O lightning, you continue to shine
O lightning, blaze in the valley of Shu‘ayb!
In the valley of Shaib perhaps
ليI have عيةنan eye تدمعit sheds tears
لي عيةن تدمع
علىupon خدوديmy cheeks أربعاfour بأربعby four
على خدودي أربعا بأربع
I have an eye that sheds tears
My eyes weep
upon my cheeks, four by four,
Four by four down my cheeks
شوقlonging إلىfor المشفعthe one whose intercession is accepted
شوق إلى المشفع
أفضلthe best of جميعall العالمينcreation أجمعaltogether
أفضل جميع العالمين أجمع
in longing for the one whose intercession is accepted,
Yearning for the Intercessor
the best of all creation, without exception.
The best of all creation combined
ربّLord فكrelease قيديmy fetter
ربّ فك قيدي
واسألكand I ask You توفيقيmy success معاtogether رشاديmy right guidance
واسألك توفيقي معا رشادي
Lord, release my fetter,
Lord, free me of my shackles
and I ask You for success and right guidance together.
And I ask you to guide me true
