بريق الغور خبر لنا عن شعب عامر

وهل ذاك الربا الذي نعهده عامر

وهل ذاك الربا الذي نعهده عامر

O gleam of al-Ghawr, tell us of Shiʿb ʿĀmir.

The gleam of the gorge brings news of a prosperous people

And is that high ground we know still inhabited?

Is that the dwelling we knew prosperous?

وهل ضربت لليلى بناديها الستائر

وهل ضربت لليلى بناديها الستائر

وهل برزت بحاجر كحيلات المحاجر

وهل برزت بحاجر كحيلات المحاجر

And have the curtains been hung for Layla at her gathering place?

Did curtains fall for Layla at her call?

And have the women with kohl-dark eyes appeared at Ḥājir?

Did faces like eyeliner emerge from the chambers?

سقى اللَه ربع ليلى

سقى اللَه ربع ليلى

وسكان الأثيلا

وسكان الأثيلا

May God send rain upon Layla's dwelling,

May God water Layla's quarter

And upon the dwellers of al-Athīlā.

And its dwellers

فهل اليهم سبيلا

فهل اليهم سبيلا

سافني العمر فيهم خسر من لم يخاطر

سافني العمر فيهم خسر من لم يخاطر

Is there, then, a way to them?

Is there a way to them?

I shall spend my life for them; whoever does not venture loses.

My life passed among them, lost is he who did not take risks

ومن لم يبذل الروح ما يشفى الخواطر

ومن لم يبذل الروح ما يشفى الخواطر

ومن هاب العوالي فلا يرقا المعالي

ومن هاب العوالي فلا يرقا المعالي

And whoever does not offer up his soul cannot soothe the heart's longings.

And he who did not give his soul to heal anxieties

And whoever fears the lances will not ascend the heights.

And he who feared heights, so did not attain heights

حقيقة كلّ غالي يكو مرقاه عالي

حقيقة كلّ غالي يكو مرقاه عالي

ولولا الشوك ما عزّ مجني كلّ حالي

ولولا الشوك ما عزّ مجني كلّ حالي

Truly, the ascent to every precious thing is lofty.

Indeed the price of all things dear is steep

And but for thorns, the harvest of every sweet fruit would not be so dear.

Without thorns the picker cannot harvest any ripe fruit

ومن لم يدمن الغوص ما جاب الجواهر

ومن لم يدمن الغوص ما جاب الجواهر

ولا نال الجوائز

ولا نال الجوائز

And whoever does not keep diving brings back no jewels,

He who did not persevere diving, gathered no pearls

Nor obtains the prizes,

Or prizes

ولا يدعى بفائز

ولا يدعى بفائز

على التحقيق عاجز

على التحقيق عاجز

Nor is called a winner;

Or was called a winner

He is, in truth, incapable.

How sweet is life altogether with the discerning

ألذّ العيش كله مع أرباب البصائر

ألذّ العيش كله مع أرباب البصائر

ولا الأسرار إلا لمن صفى السراير

ولا الأسرار إلا لمن صفى السراير

The sweetest life of all is with the masters of insight.

Secrets are only for those with pure hearts

And the mysteries are only for those who purify their innermost selves.

I see the paths of truth barely walked

أرى طرق الحقيقة قليلا سالكيها

أرى طرق الحقيقة قليلا سالكيها

وأضحى كلّ جاهل بلا شي يدعيها

وأضحى كلّ جاهل بلا شي يدعيها

I see that few tread the paths of Truth.

And every ignorant man claims them

And now every ignorant person claims it with nothing to show.

Without knowledge or deed it is impossible to ascend them

بلا علم وعمل محالا يرتقيها

بلا علم وعمل محالا يرتقيها

حمتها الأسد من دونها العسل شواجر

حمتها الأسد من دونها العسل شواجر

Without knowledge and deeds, it is impossible to rise to it.

The lions protected it, apart from it the bees built hives

Lions guard it; quivering lances cross before it.

So people of decadence

فيا أهل التلابيس

فيا أهل التلابيس

عن التقوى مفاليس

عن التقوى مفاليس

So, O people of deceit,

Sellers of piety

Bankrupt in piety,

Let not Iblis tempt you

فلا يغويكم إبليس

فلا يغويكم إبليس

ومن خالف مقاله فعاله فهو خاسر

ومن خالف مقاله فعاله فهو خاسر

So do not let Iblīs lead you astray.

Whoever defies his word, his actions make him a loser

And whoever's deeds contradict his words is a loser.

I asked God, best forgiver, to forgive my sins

سألت اللَه يغفر ذنوبي خير غافر

سألت اللَه يغفر ذنوبي خير غافر

I have asked God, the best of forgivers, to forgive my sins.
