ما استماعي لحالي النغمات

بل معان مثيرة العزمات

My listening is not for sweet melodies,

but for meanings that stir resolve.

لا بماض ولا بأمر سيأتي

همتي ما بقى حبيبي موات

Neither with the past nor with a matter yet to come

is my concern, so long as my beloved remains well-disposed.

عشقتي ذاتكم بها ذات ذاتي

يا حياتي أفنيت فيكم حياتي

My love is your essence; through it subsists the essence of my being.

O my life, I have annihilated my life in you.

ان نفي لغيركم إثباتي

وافتقاري إليكم ثرواتي

Indeed, denying anything other than you is my affirmation.

And in my need of you lie my riches.

لست أحتاج فيه للبينات

لا ولا أفتقر لنقل الثقات

In this I have no need of clear proofs.

No, nor do I need the reports of the trustworthy.

بل سمعت النداء في الذرات

يوم قلتم ألست في النسمات

Rather, I heard the call in the atoms,

on the day you said, 'Am I not?' among the souls.

أنتم قبلتي إليكم صلاتي

يا صلاتي لا تقطعوني صلاتي

You are my prayer's direction; toward you is my prayer.

O my prayer, do not cut me off from my prayer.

أنتم أصل مبتدا طاعتي

ما بقي لي توجه للجهات

You are the source from which my obedience begins.

No turning toward any direction remains for me.

بحضوري قد طاب لي حضراتي

فأديموا براحكم راحاتي

Through my presence, my gatherings have grown sweet to me.

So sustain my comforts with your wine.

ان سلوكي قد ضاع في النزهات

فاقبلوا يا سادتي عثراتي

Indeed, my wayfaring has gone astray amid diversions.

So accept my stumbles, O my masters.

ان يكن شرط جودكم حسناتي

من لأهل الذنوب والسيئات

If my good deeds are the condition of your generosity,

who, then, is there for those with sins and evil deeds?

ان برى من برّكم ما براتي

ما اعتذاري إليكم ما نجاتي

Indeed, my piety comes from your kindness; what innocence have I?

What excuse have I before you? What salvation have I?

يا أهيل العزائم الصادقات

الزموا الباب واسكبوا العبرات

O dear folk of sincere resolve,

keep to the door and pour out tears.

صححوا القصد ان أصل الثبات

صدق الاخلاص مع حسن النيات

Set your intention aright, for the root of steadfastness

is genuine sincerity joined with good intentions.

ينظر اللَه للقلوب اللواتي

قد صفت وأكملت جميل الصفات

God looks upon the hearts that

have grown pure and perfected their beautiful qualities.

بالحرى أن يصادف الولجات

مدمن القرع لازم العتبات

It is likely that entrances will be found

by the persistent knocker who keeps to the thresholds.

فهو معنى قول النبي يا رواتي

كم لربي في الدهر من نفحات

For that is the meaning of the Prophet's saying, O my transmitters:

How many breezes of grace my Lord has throughout time!

فعليه من ربي ذوي الهمات

بعد أزكى السلام أزكى الصلاة

So upon him, from my Lord, O people of high resolve,

after the purest greeting of peace, be the purest blessing.
