أغيلمة قد أعلنوا بجفائي

أغيلمة قد أعلنوا بجفائي

إلى الخالق الرب الكريم شكائي

إلى الخالق الرب الكريم شكائي

Mere lads have openly declared their rejection of me.

My friends have spurned me with their coldness

To the Creator, the generous Lord, I bring my complaint.

To the Creator, the Kind Lord, I voice my complaints

أصحاب لا يرعوا الجميل ولا لهم

أصحاب لا يرعوا الجميل ولا لهم

حسب يردّهم لصدق وفاء

حسب يردّهم لصدق وفاء

Companions who do not honor kindness, nor have they

Companions who care not for kindness, nor do they

any honor to bring them back to true fidelity.

Have reason to return truth and loyalty

إن ضاع إحساني وحسن تجملي

إن ضاع إحساني وحسن تجملي

فيهم فعند اللَه خير جزائي

فيهم فعند اللَه خير جزائي

If my kindness and gracious bearing have been wasted

If my generosity and graceful manners

on them, then with God lies my best reward.

Are lost on them, then with God is my reward

كبرت أربع قائماً ومصليا

كبرت أربع قائماً ومصليا

من فوقهم فاللَه حسن عزاء

من فوقهم فاللَه حسن عزاء

I proclaimed 'God is greatest' four times, standing and praying

For forty years I stood praying

over them; for God is a good consolation.

Above them, so God is my comfort

إني وإن ضعفت قواي وشيبت

إني وإن ضعفت قواي وشيبت

لمتى أو قد حدتني بعصائي

لمتى أو قد حدتني بعصائي

Indeed, though my strength has weakened and gray has touched

Though my strength grows weak and my hair turns white

my locks, or I have been driven onward with my staff,

How long can they prod me with their sticks?

لي همة فوق السماك علية

لي همة فوق السماك علية

لا تضعفن وان ضعفن قوائي

لا تضعفن وان ضعفن قوائي

I have a lofty resolve above al-Simāk,

My ambition remains lofty

which never weakens, even if my powers weaken.

Do not fail even as my strength wanes

أوغرّهم ليني فسمى ناقع

أوغرّهم ليني فسمى ناقع

تاللَه لا تخطى سهام دعائي

تاللَه لا تخطى سهام دعائي

And has my gentleness deceived them? For my poison is deadly.

They provoked me with their softness, that scoundrel

By God, the arrows of my supplication do not miss.

By God, the arrows of my prayers will not miss

يا ربّ من قد هانني بإهانة

يا ربّ من قد هانني بإهانة

وجحد جميلي ارمه ببلائي

وجحد جميلي ارمه ببلائي

O Lord, whoever has humiliated me with an insult

Oh Lord, those who disgraced me with insult

and denied my kindness—strike him with my affliction.

And rejected my kindness, smite them with affliction

واللَه لا يبكوا عليّ تأسفا

واللَه لا يبكوا عليّ تأسفا

وان يذكروني عند خبر سواء

وان يذكروني عند خبر سواء

And by God, they will not weep over me in regret,

By God, they will not mourn me with regret

even if they mention me upon ill news [reading uncertain].

And if they mention me, it will be with indifference

ثم الصلاة على النبيّ وآله

ثم الصلاة على النبيّ وآله

وأصحابه الفتية النجباء

وأصحابه الفتية النجباء

Then blessings upon the Prophet and his family,

Then blessings upon the Prophet and his family

and his companions, the noble young men.

And his noble companions, those virtuous youths
