رعىmay preserve اللَهGod وصلunion with منthe one whom نحبهwe love
ومنand the one whom قلبيmy heart إليهtoward him مشتاقlongs
May God preserve union with the one we love,
May God unite me with the one I love
and the one for whom my heart longs.
My heart longs for him
فهوfor he دائيmy ailment ومنهand from him طبهits cure

For he is my ailment, and from him comes its cure;
He is my remedy, my cure
and his dwelling is in the blackness of the pupils.
His image resides in the pupils of my eyes
يقولواthey say إنwhether عادstill قلبهhis heart
إليناtoward us ياO فلانso-and-so توّاقfull of longing
They ask whether his heart is still
They say, if his heart returns to us
yearning for us, O so-and-so.
Oh so-and-so, you will be reunited
فأماas for أناme وحقّby the sacred right of ربهhis Lord

علىfaithful to عهدهhis covenant ولستand I am not مذاقfalse-hearted
As for me, by his Lord’s sacred right,
As for me, by God's truth
I remain true to his covenant, no false-hearted lover.
I stand by my vow and have not wavered
عشقhas fallen in love قلبيmy heart فكيفso how أقولcan I speak بهof it
إذاwhen هوit منsince قديمlong ago عشاقan ardent lover
My heart has fallen in love—what can I say of it,
My heart is in love, so how can I speak of it
when it has long been an ardent lover?
For it has long been enthralled
إذاwhen هبّblows الصباthe east wind طمحsoars aloft بهwith it

When the east wind blows, it bears my heart aloft;
When the breeze blows, it reminds me of him
it drives my heart; wherever it turns it, I follow.
Drawing him wherever it blows
دعواleave alone العاشقthe lover ومنand the one whom علقhe clings بهto him
فقدfor indeed غلبتhave prevailed عليهover him الأشواقyearnings
Leave the lover and the one he clings to,
Leave the lover be, and the one enthralled by him
for longings have overwhelmed him.
For yearning has overcome him

And do not withhold his drink from him
Do not prevent him from drinking his fill
when his beloved is his cupbearer.
If his beloved is his cupbearer

فانfor indeed السلسبيلSalsabil, sweet-flowing water قدalready راقhas grown clear
Bring it, O boon companion, bring it!
Come, my friend, come with him
For Salsabil has become clear.
For the anklets' bells have rung
فحبهso loving him فيin الجمالbeauty حسبهenough for him

وزادand he grew أكملmore perfect بحسنthrough the beauty of الأخلاقcharacter
His beauty is reason enough to love him,
His beauty is enough, perfection upon good character
and fine character makes him more perfect still.
Nothing diminishes it, save his lack of sympathy
كملhe is perfect ماnot فيهin him شيanything يشينmars بهin him

He is perfect; nothing in him mars him,
Whoever saw him became enamored
except that he has little compassion.
He surpasses the moon in brilliance

وقدand indeed فاقhas surpassed القمرthe moon فيin الاشراقradiance
Such is his form: whoever sees him is enthralled by him;
Since I saw him, my eyes have wished for him
and he has surpassed the moon in radiance.
My tears flow ceaselessly

فدمعيso my tears لمnot يزلcease to be دفاقflowing abundantly
And my gaze, since seeing him, is spellbound by him [reading uncertain];
O people, his love is an obligation upon me
so my tears have never ceased to pour.
For I have not found passion in another

Loving him is a duty upon me, O people;
so loving anyone but him does not befit me.
