قد طنبت سفح اللوى المضارب
Make camp, for this is the end of all quests.
A wedding, this is the height of desires
The tents have been pitched at the foot of al-Liwā.
The slopes of passion have been yearned for
ماno دونapart from ليلىLaylā فيin الهوىlove مآربaims
ما دون ليلى في الهوى مآرب
هذهthese منازلهاher dwellings إذاif أنتyou راغبdesirous
هذه منازلها إذا أنت راغب
In love, there are no aims apart from Laylā.
No aspirations less than Layla in love
These are her dwellings, if you are desirous.
In it is spent a lifetime without meaning
يفنىhe is effaced بهاin her محضاwholly بلاwithout معانىmeanings
يفنى بها محضا بلا معانى
يرىhe sees عجائبwonders ياoh لهاfor them عجائبwonders
يرى عجائب يا لها عجائب
In her he is wholly effaced, without meanings.
Wondrous sights, oh what wondrous sights
He sees wonders—oh, what wonders!
Do not claim to taste love ignorantly
لاdo not تدّعيclaim ذوقthe taste of الهوىlove جهالهin ignorance
لا تدّعي ذوق الهوى جهاله
فتحرمand so you will be denied التوفيقdivine aid لاno محالهescape
فتحرم التوفيق لا محاله
Do not claim, in ignorance, to have tasted love,
Or you will be deprived of success, no doubt
Or you will inevitably be denied divine aid.
The full moon and gazelle do not couple
لاdo not تقترنunite البدرthe full moon والغزالهand the sun
لا تقترن البدر والغزاله
وشارقand what rises لاdoes not يلتقيmeet بغاربwith what sets
وشارق لا يلتقي بغارب
The full moon and the sun do not unite,
Dawn does not meet dusk
And what rises does not meet what sets.
