يا نسيم سحر عندك من أحبابنا أخبار
هلdid? خفقflicker نوركyour light الباردcool علىover تلكthose الأخدارthe secluded chambers
هل خفق نورك البارد على تلك الأخدار
O predawn breeze, have you any news from our loved ones?
Did your cool light flicker over those secluded chambers?
هلdid? نظرتهyou saw him حبيبthe beloved of القلبthe heart فيin ذلكthat الدّارdwelling
هل نظرته حبيب القلب في ذلك الدّار
حيّgreet تلكthose البواديdesert lands مجمعgathering place of الغيدgraceful maidens الأقمارthe moons
حيّ تلك البوادي مجمع الغيد الأقمار
Did you see him—the heart's beloved—in that dwelling?
Greet those desert lands, where the graceful, moonlike maidens gather.
لاحظتهاmay they watch over them نواشيrising masses of السحبclouds تهميpour down بالامطارwith rain
لاحظتها نواشي السحب تهمي بالامطار
لاnot برحcease ربعهاtheir abode مخضرgreen بالمزنwith rainclouds وأشجارand trees
لا برح ربعها مخضر بالمزن وأشجار
May the rising clouds watch over them, pouring down rain.
May their abode remain forever green with rainclouds and trees.
كمhow many قضيناwe fulfilled بسالفin the bygone عهدهاdays of their time الأوّلthe earliest أوطارdesires
كم قضينا بسالف عهدها الأوّل أوطار
حيثwhere كناwe used to نسامرconverse by night غيدهاtheir graceful maidens جنحthe darkness of الأغدارdark nights
حيث كنا نسامر غيدها جنح الأغدار
How many desires we fulfilled in their early, bygone days!
Where we would converse with their graceful maidens under cover of dark nights.
حيثwhere نسكرwe grow drunk بخمرon the wine of الريقsaliva منfrom غيرwithout خمارa hangover
حيث نسكر بخمر الريق من غير خمار
والخدودand the cheeks البواهيradiant كمhow many جنيناwe plucked بهاon them أزهارflowers
والخدود البواهي كم جنينا بها أزهار
Where we grew drunk on the wine of their saliva, without a hangover.
And those radiant cheeks—how many flowers we plucked from them!
ربّmany an عينeye توهجkindles نارهاits fire فيin الحشاthe heart's depths نارa fire
ربّ عين توهج نارها في الحشا نار
والعجبand the marvel منof غزالa gazelle صادhunted باللحظwith a glance الأنمارleopards
والعجب من غزال صاد باللحظ الأنمار
Many an eye whose fire kindles fire deep within the heart!
And the marvel is a gazelle that hunted leopards with a glance!
ربّmany a عاقلwise person بجاهلwith an ignorant one فيin الهوىlove حائرbewildered أفكارthoughts
ربّ عاقل بجاهل في الهوى حائر أفكار
ماnot لحدfor anyone ياO علىAli قدرهability علىto دفعwarding off الأقدارfate's decrees
ما لحد يا على قدره على دفع الأقدار
Many a wise man, in love with an ignorant one, is bewildered in thought.
No one, O Ali, has the power to ward off fate.
غيرonly يصبرhe bears patiently عليwith ماwhat قدhas لهfor him الخالقthe Creator اختارchosen
غير يصبر علي ما قد له الخالق اختار
ربناour Lord اخترchoose لناfor us زينgood الخصائلqualities والأشوارand counsels
ربنا اختر لنا زين الخصائل والأشوار
He can only bear patiently what the Creator has chosen for him.
Our Lord, choose for us good qualities and sound counsels.
واسترand conceal العيبfaults فانكfor You are غافرthe Forgiver of الذنبsin ستارthe Concealer of faults
واستر العيب فانك غافر الذنب ستار
ثمthen قوليmy saying وصلىand may bless اللَهGod علىupon خيرthe best مختارchosen one
ثم قولي وصلى اللَه على خير مختار
And conceal faults, for You are the Forgiver of sin, the Concealer.
Then I say: may God bless the best chosen one,
الذيwho قدhas نصرchampioned دينthe faith of المهيمنthe Guardian بالأنصارthrough the Ansar
الذي قد نصر دين المهيمن بالأنصار
ماas long as غربsets كوكبa star أوor صبحdawn فيon الأفقthe horizon نارshines
ما غرب كوكب أو صبح في الأفق نار
Who championed the Guardian's faith through the Ansar,
As long as a star sets or dawn shines on the horizon.
