يا قلب كم لك في عما وغفله
اجعلmake جهةthe direction of قصدكyour quest اليهtoward Him قبلهa qibla (prayer direction)
اجعل جهة قصدك اليه قبله
O heart, how long have you dwelt in blindness and heedlessness?
O heart, how much you have been heedless of
Make the direction of your quest toward Him your qibla.
Make your destination to Him before
ماwhat فاتhas passed منof عمركyour life فلاso there is no عوضreplacement لهfor it
ما فات من عمرك فلا عوض له
وماand what حصلhas accrued لكto you منهof it لاno ثمنprice لهfor it
وما حصل لك منه لا ثمن له
What has passed of your life has no replacement,
What has passed of your life, there is no compensation for it
And what you have of it is beyond price.
And what you have attained of it, there is no price for it
ساعاتhours عمرتyou were granted life كلهاall of them مواسمseasons of opportunity
ساعات عمرت كلها مواسم
فلاso do not يفوتكpass you by منهاfrom them الغنائمthe gains
فلا يفوتك منها الغنائم
The hours you are given to live are all seasons for gain,
The hours of your life are all seasons
So do not let the gains from them pass you by.
So do not miss from them the booties
قدalready فازhave prospered التجارthe merchants وأنتwhile you نائمasleep
قد فاز التجار وأنت نائم
حتىuntil أتىcame افلاسكyour bankruptcy بغيرwithout مهلهrespite
حتى أتى افلاسك بغير مهله
The merchants have already prospered while you slept,
The traders have won while you were sleeping
Until bankruptcy befell you without reprieve.
Until your bankruptcy came without respite
اياكbeware أنthat تقطعyou traverse مسافةthe distance of العمرlife
اياك أن تقطع مسافة العمر
بغيرwithout طاعهobedience إنindeed ذلكthat الخسرloss
بغير طاعه إن ذلك الخسر
Beware of traveling the length of life
Beware cutting the distance of life
Without obedience; that, indeed, is loss.
Without obedience, that is the loss
ماwhat أعددتhave you prepared لهfor Him منby way of مسألةa plea ومنand by way of عذرan excuse
ما أعددت له من مسألة ومن عذر
إذاwhen أقامكHe makes you stand فيin مقامthe station of عدلهHis justice
إذا أقامك في مقام عدله
What plea and what excuse have you prepared for Him
You have not prepared for it any question or excuse
When He makes you stand before His justice?
When He establishes you in the position of His justice
فلاso do not تظنthink أنthat الرجاhope أمانيidle wishes
فلا تظن أن الرجا أماني
تضيفyou add إلىto جهلكyour ignorance ضلالerror ثانيa second
تضيف إلى جهلك ضلال ثاني
So do not think that hope is idle wishing,
So do not think that wishes are securities
Adding a second error to your ignorance.
Adding to your ignorance a second misguidance
فلاso there is no رجاhope الاexcept ماwhat تعانىyou labor at
فلا رجا الا ما تعانى
منof العملwork تحصدهyou reap it فيin محلهits proper place
من العمل تحصده في محله
So there is no hope except in what you labor at—
There is no wish except what you suffer
Work that you will reap in its proper place.
From work you harvest it in its place
