O dove, what ails you at night? You neither sleep nor let others sleep.

What has come over you, that you spend the night warbling beneath darkness's wing?

He said, "What is your question? Longing has distressed me; my beloved is kept far away."

I said, "Your plight is like my own weary plight; open up and repeat your song."

O dove, ease up; I do not think your longing is a quarter of a tenth of mine.

I have tears that flow; without my tears, my fire would not be quenched.

I bear heart-piercing sorrows: love's sea beneath me, rain-laden clouds above me.

I am not like you, I swear by my Lord; I heed no reproacher.

In Bashar's gardens, their tents and curtained enclosures have already been pitched.

How many moons are there, their lights sparkling across the lands!

Do you think the fates will favor us with reunion, so we may fulfill our desires?

O Generous One, I beseech You: renew our old, bygone covenant.

No lover longs as I do; Layla's Majnun falls short of me in passion.

That which hindered me kept me from my loved ones—oh, my sorrow, and oh, my losses!

How hard separation is! Fate has come between them and me.

Bring me your camels, chanting driver of the mounts; travel on and do not hesitate.
