Cleaving with its light through the darkness of young men?

Is this a nose, or the edge

Of an Indian-forged blade that has adorned the cheeks?

ذا نرجس أم وقد

ماء ونار قد جرى في الأعيان

ماء ونار قد جرى في الأعيان

Is this narcissus, or a blaze

Of water and fire that has flowed through the eyes?

ذا عسجد أم ورد

ذا عسجد أم ورد

من غر بستان جرى في الأوجان

من غر بستان جرى في الأوجان

Is this gold, or roses

From a radiant garden, flowing across the cheeks?

هذه نجوم تبدو

هذه نجوم تبدو

تحت النقاب أم ذا سلوس مرجان

تحت النقاب أم ذا سلوس مرجان

Are these stars appearing

Beneath the veil, or is this a chain of coral?

ذا خمر أم ذا شهد

ذا خمر أم ذا شهد

أم طعم ريقك في شتيت الأسنان

أم طعم ريقك في شتيت الأسنان

Is this wine, or honey,

Or the taste of your saliva among the spaced teeth?

زهي لماك البرد

زهي لماك البرد

أيضاً ودرّ حلّ وسط مرجان

أيضاً ودرّ حلّ وسط مرجان

Hailstones have adorned your dark lips,

And pearls, too, have settled amid coral.

جيدك زهاه العقد

جيدك زهاه العقد

وصدرك الواسع زهى برمان

وصدرك الواسع زهى برمان

Your neck is adorned by the necklace,

And your broad chest is adorned with pomegranates.

خصرك ضناه الجهد

خصرك ضناه الجهد

أم حلقه حتى طوى بالأعكان

أم حلقه حتى طوى بالأعكان

Has toil wasted your waist,

Or shaved it down until it lay folded within the belly's creases?

ذراع لك والزند

ذراع لك والزند

خدلج والسقاق عبل ريان

خدلج والسقاق عبل ريان

Your arm and forearm

Are plump, and the legs are stout and full.

ذا أسمر أم قد

أم غصن سائق في كثيب عقبان

أم غصن سائق في كثيب عقبان

Is this a dusky spear, or a figure,

Or a 'driving' branch in a mound of eagles?

ذا عرفك أم ذا ندّ

ذا عرفك أم ذا ندّ

تعطرت منه جميع الأكوان

تعطرت منه جميع الأكوان

Is this your fragrance, or fragrant incense,

From which all the worlds have grown fragrant?

ما ان لوصفك حد

ما ان لوصفك حد

ولا اختلف في وصف حسنك اثنان

ولا اختلف في وصف حسنك اثنان

There is no limit to describing you,

And no two have disagreed in describing your beauty.

أرق جفوني السهد

أرق جفوني السهد

والقلب هائم مستهام ولهان

والقلب هائم مستهام ولهان

Sleeplessness has kept my eyelids awake,

And the heart wanders, love-struck and distraught.

وأضنى فؤادي الصد

وأضنى فؤادي الصد

فجد بنظرة يا ظبي نعمان

فجد بنظرة يا ظبي نعمان

And rejection has worn down my heart;

So grant a glance, O gazelle of Nuʿmān.

وشكرنا والحمد

وشكرنا والحمد

لربنا جزل العطا والاحسان

لربنا جزل العطا والاحسان

And our thanks and praise

Are to our Lord, lavish in giving and kindness.

وكلّ حين تغدو

وكلّ حين تغدو

صلاته لخير نسل عدنان

صلاته لخير نسل عدنان

And at every moment goes forth

His blessing to the best of Adnān's descendants.
