Welcome, young gazelle—you have outshone the gazelle’s graceful neck,
Hail, young gazelle! You have outshone the gazelle's neck
with your long, elegant neck and your great, wide eyes.
With your long, slender neck and your wide eyes.
كسيتyou were clothed منby خالقكyour Creator بحلةin a robe منof جمالbeauty
فأزريتso you put to shame نورthe light of الشمسthe sun وفقتand you surpassed نورthe light of الهلالthe crescent moon
Your Creator clothed you in a robe of beauty;
Your Creator clothed you in a robe of beauty,
you eclipsed the sunlight and surpassed the crescent’s glow.
So you put the sun's light to shame and surpassed the crescent's glow.
حويتyou encompassed كلّall الجمالbeauty فصارso became كلكall of you كمالperfection
منwho مقبلاapproaching مدبراdeparting حسنتyou were lovely فيin كلّevery حالstate
You gathered all beauty, until your whole being became perfection.
You gathered all beauty, so your whole being became perfection.
Whether approaching or turning away, you are beautiful in every state.
You who, approaching or departing, are lovely in every state.

Ah, what an enchantment, stealing away the reason of men!
Ah, what a temptation that has stolen the minds of men!
No bough upon the dune ever traced such grace when the north wind stirred it,
No [tender shoot] of a dune-grown bough, if the north wind stirs it,
وانand even if ترنحit sways ومادand it bends وانand even if تمايسit sways gracefully ومالand it leans

however it swayed and rocked, however it strutted and leaned,
Even if it sways and bends, even if it sways gracefully and leans,
like your areca-palm figure in suppleness and poise.
Is like your areca-palm stature in suppleness and proportion.
قتلتنيyou killed me بالهوىwith love وليسand is not قتليkilling me حلالlawful
منfrom قوسthe bow of حاجبan eyebrow قسيcruel رميتنيyou shot at me بالنبالwith arrows
You have killed me with love, though killing me is not lawful.
You have slain me with love, and slaying me is not lawful.
From the bow of a pitiless brow, you shot me with arrows.
From your cruel eyebrow's bow, you shot me with arrows.
حملتI bore منfrom عشقتكlove for you لوif حملتهthey bore it الجبالthe mountains
لدكدكتthey would be shattered كلهاall of them وصرنand they would become مثلlike الرمالthe sands
I have borne of your love what, had the mountains borne it,
I bore such a burden of love for you that, were the mountains to bear it,
would surely have crushed them all and turned them into sand.
They would all be shattered and become like sand.
منwhoever قالsaid انthat الهوىlove سهلeasy قريبnear المنالattainment
فقدthen indeed كذبhe lied وافترىand fabricated وقالand said قولa statement of المحالthe impossible
Whoever says that love is easy and its attainment near
Whoever says that love is easy and readily attained
has lied, invented falsehood, and spoken the impossible.
Has lied and fabricated, and uttered an impossible claim.
كمhow many عقلa mind فيهin it انتكسwas overturned وكمand how much بذلwas spent فيهon it مالwealth
كمhow many طرفan eye منهbecause of it سهرstayed awake وضاقand was distressed بهby it ربّa possessor of حالstanding
How many a mind has it overturned, and how much wealth has been spent upon it!
How many minds have been undone by it, and how much wealth has been spent on it!
How many eyes have lain sleepless because of it; how many a master of spiritual states has it distressed!
How many eyes have stayed awake because of it, and men of standing have been distressed by it!

Toward union with him—onward! Whoever seeks becomes precious.
Toward union with him, onward! And whoever seeks becomes precious.
Whoever possesses a beautiful spiritual state will find his ascent lofty.
Whoever has a goodly state will rise to a lofty station.

The poem is done. Send blessings upon the Chosen One, Bilal’s master,
It is finished; send blessings upon the Chosen One, Bilal's patron,
and upon all his Companions and his family—the best of families.
And all his companions and his family—the finest family.
