Sulayma generously bestowed union and gladness,

And affection from her—not rejection and estrangement.

And in learning, he is a sea forever surging,

Beside which the flood of seven rivers is slight.

So, O judge, the description of whose excellence

    Surpasses reckoning, counting, and enumeration:

Your letter is sweeter to the heart than wishes,

And more pleasant than a breeze's passing as it drifts by night.

And I, of your sincere affection and fidelity,

Am well aware; my knowledge encompasses it all.

And your guarded mind bears witness that I

Hold to sincerity and steadfast affection throughout my life.

And even if I reproach him or complain of him,

My aim is that his affection endure in purity.

    And reproach recalls the wrong between us;

May God forgive that reproach for all time.

    For love of you is in my heart, and mention of you on my lips;

And your person is in my sight, and [your likeness] in my innermost self.

And from whose branches the fruit of gratitude has ripened:

God's peace be upon you at every hour,

For all time, in safety and good fortune, with gladness.

May you ever remain in lasting honor and blessing,

[Honored] and esteemed, in eminence and abundance.

And I close with my blessings, at every time and moment,

Upon the radiant moon, as long as the turtledoves sing:

Muhammad, the chosen one from the house of Hashim,

The unique jewel in the prophets' necklace, who was borne by night

Blessings and peace [upon him] and his family,

And his companions, the luminaries and radiant stars.
