Ah, would that I knew whether our condition will improve

With fair well-being, our cares dispelled.

فظني جميل واليقين محقق

فظني جميل واليقين محقق

فلا خيب الرحمن حسن ظنوننا

فلا خيب الرحمن حسن ظنوننا

For my hope is good, and certainty is assured.

So may the All-Merciful not disappoint our good expectations.

وقد جبل الرحمن قلبي على الهدى

وقد جبل الرحمن قلبي على الهدى

بحب حبيب بعد البين بيننا

بحب حبيب بعد البين بيننا

And the All-Merciful has fashioned my heart upon right guidance

Through love of a beloved, after the separation between us.

رعى اللَه ليلى والفريق ومن به

رعى اللَه ليلى والفريق ومن به

لقد سكنت تلك الربوع قلوبنا

لقد سكنت تلك الربوع قلوبنا

May God guard Layla, the company, and whoever is within it.

Indeed, those dwellings have settled in our hearts.

منازل أشهى من حياة معادة

منازل أشهى من حياة معادة

إلى ميت به يجمع اللَه شملنا

إلى ميت به يجمع اللَه شملنا

Abodes sweeter than life restored

To a dead man, through whom God gathers us together.

مساكنها ما لذها من مساكن

مساكنها ما لذها من مساكن

عجب كيف يسلو أو يطيب سكوننا

عجب كيف يسلو أو يطيب سكوننا

Her dwellings—how delightful they are as dwellings!

A wonder—how can one cease longing, or our repose be sweet?

فهل عادها بالعهد ذي قد مضى لنا

فهل عادها بالعهد ذي قد مضى لنا

وهل عادهم بعد النوى يذكروننا

وهل عادهم بعد النوى يذكروننا

So is she still true to the pledge that was once ours?

And do they still remember us after separation?

وان هجرونا أو أطالوا بعادنا

وان هجرونا أو أطالوا بعادنا

مرادهم أشهى لنا من مرادنا

مرادهم أشهى لنا من مرادنا

And if they forsake us or prolong our separation,

Their desire is sweeter to us than our own.

فحاشاهم من بعد ما صح ودّنا

فحاشاهم من بعد ما صح ودّنا

لهم أن يهينوا أو يطيلوا بعادنا

لهم أن يهينوا أو يطيلوا بعادنا

So far be it from them—once our love has proved sincere

Toward them—to humiliate us or prolong our separation.

لحى اللَه ربي كلّ واش وعاذل

لحى اللَه ربي كلّ واش وعاذل

فملذوذنا فيما يحبوا جنوننا

فملذوذنا فيما يحبوا جنوننا

May God, my Lord, curse every talebearer and reproacher.

For our delight lies in their loving our madness.

فغيّ الهوى رشد فلا تعذلوننا

فغيّ الهوى رشد فلا تعذلوننا

فحسناتنا فيما تعدّوا ذنوبنا

فحسناتنا فيما تعدّوا ذنوبنا

For love's waywardness is right guidance, so do not reproach us.

For our good deeds lie in what you count as our sins.

دعونا ومن نهوى فذوا الجود غافر

دعونا ومن نهوى فذوا الجود غافر

على الرغم منكم يصلح اللَه شأننا

على الرغم منكم يصلح اللَه شأننا

Leave us and those we love alone, for the Lord of bounty forgives.

In spite of you, God will set our affairs right.

قد اختلفت أهواؤنا وطباعنا

قد اختلفت أهواؤنا وطباعنا

دواكم لنا فيما تحبوه داؤنا

دواكم لنا فيما تحبوه داؤنا

Our desires and our temperaments have indeed diverged.

Your remedy for us, in what you favor, is our disease.

وتمت بحمد اللَه وأزكى صلاته

وتمت بحمد اللَه وأزكى صلاته

على أحمد يستر به اللَه عيبنا

على أحمد يستر به اللَه عيبنا

And it is complete, with praise of God and His purest blessing

Upon Ahmad, through whom God conceals our fault.
