Whoever does not restrain himself

from the depths of desire tastes humiliation.

لو يكن عالياً بالزبرقان

Whoever stoops low, his aspiration stoops with him,

Whoever sinks low is brought low by his aspiration,

even were he as high as the radiant moon.

كلّ جرح علاجه ممكن

كلّ جرح علاجه ممكن

ما خلا يا فتى جرح اللسان

ما خلا يا فتى جرح اللسان

Every wound can be treated,

Every wound can be treated,

except, young man, the wound of the tongue.

واصحب اللطف في كلّ الأمور

واصحب اللطف في كلّ الأمور

ما لطف كلّ شي إلا وزان

ما لطف كلّ شي إلا وزان

Keep gentleness with you in every affair;

And keep gentleness as your companion in all matters;

nothing gentleness touches but grows fair.

nothing is treated gently without gaining beauty.

انما يوقع المرء الغبي

انما يوقع المرء الغبي

في جميع المصائب خصلتان

في جميع المصائب خصلتان

Only two traits cast the foolish man

What casts the foolish man

into every calamity:

into every misfortune is just two traits:

الطمع والتعدّي للذي

الطمع والتعدّي للذي

ليس يعنيه فاحذر يا فلان

ليس يعنيه فاحذر يا فلان

greed, and intruding into what

greed, and meddling in what

does not concern him—so beware, O so-and-so.

والزم الصبر في كلّ الأمور

صاحب الصبر في العقبى معان

Hold fast to patience in every affair;

لا تعادى زمانك يغلبك

كن مسايراً يسايرك الزمان

Do not contend with your age, or it will defeat you;

Do not oppose your time; it will defeat you.

Keep pace, and time will keep pace with you.

لا تعرج على وطن وكن

أينما كان عزك هو المكان

أينما كان عزك هو المكان

Do not cling to any homeland; rather, be

wherever your honor is—that is the place.

فالغنى الغنى كل الغنى

التقى ما سوى التقوى ففان

For wealth—wealth, all true wealth—is

piety; all besides piety passes away.

بالتقى يجتمع لك يا فتى

في حياتك وفي الأخرى الأمان

Through piety there come together for you, young man,

safety in this life and in the hereafter.

لا يقنطك ذنبك والتزم

لا يقنطك ذنبك والتزم

حسن ظنك بربك كل أوان

Let not your sin drive you to despair; hold fast

Do not let your sin drive you to despair; hold fast to

to thinking well of your Lord at every moment.

a good opinion of your Lord at all times.

وأنبع السيئة الحسنة أبدا

وأنبع السيئة الحسنة أبدا

واستعن به عليه المستعان

واستعن به عليه المستعان

And always make a good deed follow the bad one;

And always follow a bad deed with a good one,

seek His aid—He is the One whose aid is sought.

لا تمنى على اللَه المحال

لا تمنى على اللَه المحال

مطلبك منه للعصمه جنان

مطلبك منه للعصمه جنان

Do not ask of God the impossible:

Do not wish for the impossible from God;

to seek sinlessness from Him is madness.

your asking Him for sinlessness is madness.

أنت ما كنت حيا في جهاد

أنت ما كنت حيا في جهاد

كن قوي اليقين ثبت الجنان

كن قوي اليقين ثبت الجنان

As long as you live, you are engaged in struggle;

As long as you live, you are in a struggle.

be strong in certainty, steadfast of heart.

واذا ما يقينك صح به

واذا ما يقينك صح به

فهو يحفظك ما قد شاه كان

فهو يحفظك ما قد شاه كان

And when your certainty in Him is sound,

And when your certainty in Him is sound,

He will guard you; whatever He has willed shall be.

then He protects you; whatever He has willed comes to pass.

واذا كنت من أهل اليقين

واذا كنت من أهل اليقين

صح قدم التصوّف لك وبان

صح قدم التصوّف لك وبان

And if you are among the people of certainty,

And if you are among the people of certainty,

the footing of Sufism becomes firm and clear for you.

يتضح سر أسرار الغيوب

يتضح سر أسرار الغيوب

في القلوب والخبر عندك عيان

في القلوب والخبر عندك عيان

The secret of the mysteries of the unseen grows clear

within hearts, and report for you becomes direct sight.

والكلام بعد هذا لا ينبغي

قد حسن ها هنا قبض العنان

After this, speech is no longer fitting;

And after this, further speech is not fitting;

here it is well to draw in the reins.

والصلاة والسلام على النبي

الأتمان ثم الأكملان

And blessings and peace upon the Prophet—

the two most complete, then the two most perfect.
