O you of perfect, wondrous beauty, show tenderness
O epitome of perfect beauty, show compassion
Toward a lover wasted, love-stricken, and gravely ill.
To a devotee, worn down, revered and gentle

For everyone who delays has fulfilled his promises
For every ardent lover has kept his promise
To his lover, while you have not kept faith with yours.
To his beloved, yet to your lover, you are cruel

When will God dispel the suffering through your bearer of good news,
When will sorrow leave us, O you who bring glad tidings
As the bearer of good news came to Jacob with tidings of Joseph?
As Jacob was brought the good news of Joseph

I complained of wasting illness, but to one who did not listen,
I complained of anguish, but not to a listener
And poured out my complaint to one who would not judge fairly.
I poured out my laments, but not to a consoler

In my heart there is a flame only your sweet saliva
Except by your saliva—honey blended with wine.
Mixed with honey, can extinguish

Yes, with sweet al-ʿUdhayb I slake my thirst and find healing.
Only your sweet, pure drink will slake and satisfy

Then my longing for you cannot be comprehended by any admirer

Indeed, my love for you and my loss of restraint have become widely known,
My love for you is widespread and my passion unrestrained
Yet greater than that, my beloved ones, is what remains hidden.
But greater than it, my dears, is that which lies hidden

I would follow you, unwilling to lag behind
