    What are keen-edged swords—nay, what are lances—

    Beside eyes whose point is a lingering sidelong glance?

    كم به أجسامنا تشكو الضنا

    Many a waist is graced by extreme slenderness;

    How often our bodies, because of it, complain of wasting!

    Our illnesses come from those with languid eyelids.

    We are lions, yet our gazelles have hunted us.

    ربّ بطل منه قد ذاق العنا

    Many a gazelle lies hidden in the courtyard;

    Many a champion has tasted torment from it.

    فالذي نهواه يا ساقي دنا

    Cupbearer of the goblets, your night has drawn near;

    For the one we love, O cupbearer, has drawn near.

    Give us the heady wine—give us drink!

    For how often prolonged estrangement has wasted us!

    علنا نسلو قليلاً علنا

    Your first draught is sweet after what has sickened us;

    Perhaps we may find a little solace—perhaps.

    What ails us, O brother of the gazelle—what ails us?

    We have exhausted our wealth in loving you.

    فالهوى عن حالنا قد حالنا

    Do not ask, O my enchanter, about our state;

    For love has turned us away from our former state.

    Indeed, my gaze itself has done us wrong,

    Since it plucked the roses on your cheeks.

    وصلكم فيه السعادة والهنا

    Honor us with a meeting right here;

    In union with you are happiness and bliss.

    Ah, me, for what has befallen me—ah, me!

    Every seeker has attained you except me.

    فبه تحلو القوافي والغنا

    So in remembrance of our Creator we find sufficiency;

    For through Him, rhymes and song grow sweet.

    So my wish is to see the caravan bend its course

    At al-Muhassab, around the foot of al-Munhana.
