If ever you take a close friend,

do not trust every companion in friendship.

And if you are given a choice among them, cling

to those among them with reason and modesty.

    For reason has, whenever

virtues vie in excellence, no equal.

And folly is a disease afflicting noble lineages,

and its mildest malady is an incurable disease.

    And whoever leaves consequences unheeded,

even his easiest endeavor is toil.

So never trust fools in any matter,

even if they were sons of Māʾ al-Samāʾ (Water of Heaven).

For they are unreceptive to instruction, so leave them,

and abandon all hope of that.
